SNL Kicks Off 2020 With Adam Driver
Welcome back, Saturday Night Live, and welcome back Saturday Night Live fans! Adam Driver brings SNL into a brand-new decade with the first brand new episode in over a month’s time!
Last decade was closed out by Eddie Murphy finally returning to SNL and it basically reminded everybody that, if he wants it, Murphy still has massive appeal. He just needs to make good choices when selecting films, right?
Driver is making his return to Saturday Night Live, again in the wake of a Star Wars release. The final film in the most recent Star Wars saga, The Rise of the Skywalker hit cinemas last month. Kylo Ren gave his goodbyes – for now, as you know that very few Star Wars characters ever give their final goodbyes once, even if they end up dead. Except maybe Qui-Gon Jinn… but even he got a few post-mortem words with Yoda – offscreen, of course.
(Author’s note: I haven’t seen Rise of the Skywalker, so any reference to Kylo Ren biting it during the movie is pure speculation and thus maybe not a spoiler – but if you cared, you’d probably have seen it by now)
Either way, hot-off-the-heels of Star Wars, you know they’re going to milk that cow almost as much as Disney is. SNL has a good long relationship with Star Wars themed sketched, all the way back to Bill Murray crooning his own words to the Star Wars Main Title: “Star Wars! If they should bar wars, please let these Star Wars stay.” And up to the most recent cast appearances on SNL, including fake auditions with Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, and Donald Glover’s “Lando Summit” – an intergalactic summit for black people under the Empire.
But nothing compares to Driver’s own appearance, in this Undercover Boss parody:
Controversially, Kylo Ren is the best villain big screen Star Wars has seen. So, this just rules. Hopefully (read: probably) he’ll appear in some manner this weekend.
Supporting Kylo… er, Adam Driver, as musical guest is Halsey. The last time she appeared as musical guest on SNL, she also hosted! And did an incredible performance of “Without Me” while she painted a massive self portrait. So, look forward to her doing some amazing stuff again, too!
Adam Driver and Halsey are great choices to set the tone for the rest of the season, year and decade. Last decade was a king maker for so many cast members. Keep a close eye on this one.
