Happy Mother’s Day to Even More People Now

There’s a chilling, dystopic irony about opening the Mother’s Day episode with a sketch about the potential overturning of abortion laws in the U.S.

But here we are. So funny it hurts, or so real it’s funny? And so close to reality that it’s scary. The satire presented in SNL‘s opening sketch is hopefully unmissable. And hopefully funny, and not otherwise triggering for some.

The bleakness of the subject contrasting with the roaring laughter of the studio audience is eerie. Remember this sketch – it will remain a snapshot of the political and cultural strife the U.S. is currently undergoing for years to come.

Little Benedict’s Momma

But it is Mother’s Day (as Weekend Update anchor Colin Jost sorrowfully quipped, whether you want it to be or not). And Benedict Cumberbatch turned a dour opener about forced motherhood into a feel-good celebration of welcome motherhood.

Emotional whiplash aside, the episode was funny. Like, funniest all year funny. Whether it was Benedict Cumberbatch looking suspiciously like Sam Elliot to play essentially the same character he did in The Power of the Dog during an ice cream tasting, or using those basic as heck display plaques with modern proverbs about the joys and trials of modern middleclass motherhood to completely destroy an unexpecting mother, there are some must-watch sketches from this show. So, do what you must, and watch!

Saturday Night Live can be streamed live and On Demand on the new Global TV App and on STACKTV. Global is also available through all major TV service providers.

Tune in to Global next week, May 14 at 11.30 et/8.30 pt for a brand new Saturday Night Live with host Selena Gomez and musical guest Post Malone!
