This weekend on Saturday Night LiveJennifer Lopez hosted and Jimmy Fallon, Paul Rudd and James Corden make cameos!

This past week, there has been high school-levels of gossip floating around the 2019 NATO summit. The short of it is that Trudeau, Macron and Johnson were caught on tape criticizing Trump for his tardiness. And the criticism quickly turned into mockery.

So SNL took that and ran with it, bringing in heavy-hitters Fallon, Rudd and Corden to carry out the sketch opposite of Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump.

While these political leaders don’t really have quirks for impressionists to latch onto, it really seems more like Jimmy Fallon was doing a Mike Myers impression rather than a Justin Trudeau impression. A bit disappointing, considering how skilled of an impressionist Fallon actually is.

The gang eventually invites Angela Merkel (Kate McKinnon) to sit with them, and Boris Johnson tags Trump with an “Impeach Me” sign on his back. Classic.

Jennifer Lopez stole the show soon after, though, when he monologue turned into one of the biggest musical performances SNL has seen in a while. The song was the old Christmas standard “Santa Clause is Coming to Town”, and by the end of it the Rockettes were involved. They’re pretty much just down the street from SNL, so, yeah, why not?

Lopez’s comedy niche is playing the classic “straight man” role. Essentially, she’s really good at letting the people around her be funny, to the extent that it in itself is funny. And, notably difficult; Lou Costello can be quoted as saying “Comics are a dime a dozen. Good straight men are hard to find.”

So good on Lopez for being able to fill that role, and fill it well! SNL doesn’t always have one in their cast, and this cast is no exception; past examples include Phil Hartman, Darryl Hammond and Rachel Dratch (who herself could get zany enough to fill any role). And Lopez’s skill in the role shined during the most recent adventure of Pete Davidson’s “Chad” character, an apathetic and vacant young man who seems to have undeniable charm.
