The lovable Don Cheadle will be taking to the 30 Rockefeller stage to host Saturday Night Live for the very first time!
Don Cheadle is the freaking man when it comes to flying around in over-powered robot suits, blasting the hell out of aliens – that’s why he’s best known as War Machine from the increasingly popular (somehow that’s still possible) Marvel movies. First appearing as War Machine in Iron Man 2, replacing Terrance Howard who had originated the role in the first Iron Man movie, Don Cheadle quickly became a fan favourite with his somehow cool and warm at the same time demeanor, and his aforementioned skill of badguy blasting.
This is a Donny who is not out of his element (sadly there is at least one too many of those these days). Before Marvel gave him the Tony Goodtimes exoskeleton, Cheadle featured in many renowned, Oscar winning and Oscar nominated films, like Hotel Rwanda, Traffic, Boogie Nights and the Ocean’s series. And now, he has the biggest honour of all – bigger than working with that hack Steven Soderberg, or being in a heist series jam-packed with the biggest stars of its day, or being the new and ongoing face of a beloved 40 year old superhero – hosting Saturday Night Live!
Now, it’s no secret that The Avengers is a huge film series, and that superheros in general are quite popular. The last few superhero-playing hosts – Jason Momoa, Chadwick Boseman, Gal Gadot – all reprised their superhero role for a sketch. SNL likely doesn’t have a Stark Industries JRXL-1000 Variable Threat Response Battle Suit just lying around props because they’ve had no use for it before, and that kind of thing literally doesn’t exist – there hasn’t been a full body suit for Iron Man since the first Iron Man film – it’s been at least half CG since.
So will Cheadle suit up as War Machine this weekend? Metaphorically, probably. Literally, likely not – the SNL props team is good, but that’s a hefty order. But there is more to War Machine than rockets and repulsor rays
