This weekend, SNL‘s bestest boy Will Ferrell returns to host!

That’s right, a generation’s favourite Saturday Night Live star will be on this week’s episode, to bring his crash-and-burn-loudly style of comedy back to the show.

Former cast mate of Ferrell’s Seth Meyers said it best when he described his approach to sketches: if it’s going poorly, make the audience as uncomfortable as possible. Will Ferrell has the ability to turn up the heat when things aren’t funny, juuuuuust enough to make it funny again – though usually not as intended. A classic example of this is his infamous Old Prospector sketch, which never made it to air (because the entire male cast save for Ferrell couldn’t stop laughing) but appeared on a Best of Will Ferrell DVD. The sketch starts to bomb, so Ferrell did what he does best:

Will Ferrell signed-on to Saturday Night Live in 1995. Times were different back then. Not everyone had a cell phone, there was no Facebook, and DC films were way better than Marvel films. But also, in many ways, things haven’t changed much. There was a sexual predator in the White House who was facing impeachment hearings. Everyone preferred Coke over Pepsi. And Keenan Thompson was starring in a sketch comedy series. Some things just never change.

Farrell last hosted Saturday Night Live not even two years ago. He dusted off a couple of old hats – one of his lesser known characters Jacob Silj and George W. Bush made appearances. Will ol’ W. come out again? Maybe one of his old cast mates will return to help him out with a classic sketch? Tracey Morgan showed up last time, so why not Cheri Oteri, or Chris Kattan?

Regardless, Will Ferrell always chews the scenery in the best way possible. If you’re even a little bit of a fan of his, you won’t be disappointed when you see him host Saturday Night Live this Saturday, with musical guest King Princess.
