Saturday Night Live Welcomes Sterling K. Brown to its Stable of Hosts

Coming up this week on Saturday Night Live: host Sterling K. Brown and musical guest James Bay!

Here we go with another first-timer – Sterling K. Brown is new to the SNL scene. Heck, he’s kind of new to the “being a massive star” scene. His recent breakout roles in the critically acclaimed The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story the widely popular This Is Us and a role in a little movie called Black Panther – maybe you’ve heard of it? It’s just been the biggest movie out there for weeks now – have rocketed him to the a-list – his career progressed from “that’s the guy from…” to “that’s Sterling K. Brown!” faster than you can say “crock-pot with faulty wiring.”

Prior to landing the American Crime Story gig, Sterling K. Brown was a day player, doing one-off roles across the television landscape – you might have seen him in an episode of NCIS or The Good Wife a few years back. But then even the littlest bit of mainstream success showed just how talented and charismatic of an actor Brown is, and got him to where he is, and so obviously fits.

Signing Brown to host is a similar move to Sam Rockwell hosting a couple months ago – they’re both one of those guys who you sorta know from somewhere, have been working for a long time, and have recently become the biggest thing. So expect a sketch from that hit NBC drama he stars in. And expect some major O.J. Simpson stuff. It’s been a little while, but Keenan Thompson is probably more than happy to dust off that old impression. Heck, maybe there’s even room for Chris Redd to do his Sterling K. Brown impression that he did that one time!

Last week’s episode hosted by Charles Barkley was stellar – the writing was good, classic quality SNL sketch writing that was able to take Barkley’s lack of acting talent and run with it (oh, he was an amazing host on an amazing episode, but to be honest, he’s not a talented host in the traditional sense). That, along with Alec Baldwin’s return to form as President Donald Trump – like a glorious phoenix rising from the ashes of a joke that just wasn’t really funny anymore – shows promise for the quality of show that Saturday Night Live will have to offer from now until the season finale. It’s the home stretch, folks, so it’s time to pull out all the stops.

Also on the bill this weekend is singer/songwriter James Bay, along with his fresh new single “Wild Love.” So it will be another show that you’ll hate yourself for missing. Cancel your plans, ignore your duties and stop picking at that, because you’re going to want to stay home to watch SNL on Saturday.
