Saturday Night Live: Steve Martin Cameos as Roger Stone

On this weekend’s James McAvoy-hosted episode of Saturday Night Live, Steve Martin cameos as the recently indicted Roger Stone.

The recent episode of Saturday Night Live aimed to please with a delightful and versatile lineup of sketches ranging from accessible hilarity to truly bizarre. The episode kicked off with a Tucker Carlson parody featuring the recently indicted (and even more recently bailed out) Roger Stone, one of Trump’s guys who helped him during his campaign. Which isn’t inherently illegal, but maybe it should be, applied retroactively at the rate all these guys are going down.

Anyway, Steve Martin, long time friend of SNL and now professional cameo-er (he seems to show up at least once per season just to let everyone know he’s still around) played the probably guilty Stone, giving an interview that could only be given by a true Trump associate.

Stone didn’t get off that easy, either – the boys on Weekend Update focused hard on Stone, calling him the likes of “business Babadook” and “steam punk Lincoln.”

James McAvoy gave SNL his all this episode, and proved himself an adaptable sketch comedy actor – where other dramatic actors break or flub cue card readings, McAvoy was on the ball nearly the entire episode – yeah, he flubbed once in his monologue which was super charming, and broke during the ten-to-one sketch, but considering the other roles and lines he was given throughout the evening, McAvoy showed he’s got skills.

But what he was most proud of for the episode was his Scottish heritage – he was in full accent (rarely heard from many Scottish performers working in both the British and American film industries) and in full traditional garb. That’s right, he brought his kilt with him for the opening monologue, which he made all about Scotland.

It was a darling of an episode with a real high and positive energy surrounding it. Maybe it’s a sigh of relieve over the American government shutdown finally coming to an end, or maybe (probably) McAvoy gelled that well with the cast. But this weekend’s episode was more feel-good than cynical, a nice change of pace from the other politically charged comedy these days.
