This weekend Saturday Night Live honoured their five-timer host John Mulaney!

Mulaney’s Intervention

John Mulaney went full mask-off for his monologue, sharing and laughing about his recent stint as a drug addict, from intervention to rehabilitation. It’s pretty daring to get on live national television and let everything out like that, and even more so to do it in his Millennial Emo Philips on Ritalin style for laughs. Which is great, because John Mulaney is one of the best modern stand ups, and always brings his best material to the SNL monologue stage.

Despite the laughs, the sincerity of the monologue was warming. John Mulaney looks as though he always feels at home when he’s on Saturday Night Live. He brings a warm, welcome presence to an already homey institution.

Mulaney’s Induction

This weekend’s episode was Mulaney’s fifth time hosting, so that means fanfare. Since the early 1990s, SNL has made a big deal over performers who have hosted the show five times, enough to create The Fiver-Timers Club. And since Mulaney has hosted once a season for the past five years, he gets to join!

Members Paul Rudd, Steve Martin, Candice Bergen, Tina Fey, Elliott Gould, as well as non-member Conan O’Brien showed up to welcome/not welcome John Mulaney into their decreasingly exclusive club. Paul Rudd tried to hijack it for himself. Steve Martin thought John Mulaney was someone else, and Candice Bergen didn’t know who the hell he was. And what Tina Fey offered him as a drink might be considered poison. But the important thing is that Mulaney was eventually inducted, and hence immortalized (and available to berate new members in the future, as it is the way).

Tune in Global next weekend, March 5 11.30 et/8.30 pt for a brand new Saturday Night Live with host Oscar Isaac and musical guest Charli XCX.
