Timothée Chalamet, an Actor’s Actor

You may know him from Call Me By Your Name. You may know him from Lady Bird. You may even know him from Homeland. Or you may not know him at all. But Timothée Chalamet is an up-and-coming young actor – or at least, has been, because now that he’s hosting Saturday Night Live, he’s already there!

This kid’s a real actor. Like, he’s got real talent when it comes to being a character and emotional expression. Your Bruce Campbells or your Stephen Tobolowskys don’t have much on Timothée Chalamet with his natural screen presence. So what does that mean for his time on SNL?

Well, it’s not like actors of his ilk haven’t hosted before. SNL has a long history with bringing in actors who are seemingly “above” the show. Octavia Spencer – long overdue – hosted in 2017. His Lady Bird co-star Saoirse Ronan hosted a few years ago. Somehow Christopher Waltz decided to accept the invitation.

Oh, and don’t forget about John Lithgow, who hosted before he was on 3rd Rock from the Sun and still had a lot of cred in the traditional/trained actor scene. But he still went all out and entirely zany while on SNL!

These kinds of hosts – the actors who get very serious about their craft – often bring something to the show that the usual A-lister, or stand up, or comedic actor doesn’t. Maybe it’s an opportunity to let loose for them. Maybe it’s their seriousness against the silly sketches. Or maybe they’re just that good that they fully understand sketch comedy better than people who have studied under it for years. Or maybe it’s just darn good writing? Either way, expect something fresh from Timothée Chalamet this weekend. Saturday Night Live is in a good place for freshness.

Don’t miss Timothée Chalamet and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band this weekend, December 12 at 11.30 et/8.30 pt on Global!

Saturday Night Live can be streamed live and On Demand on the new Global TV App and on STACKTV. Global is also available through all major TV service providers.
