Did production trespass on sacred land in Fiji? Did Jeff Probst fail to deliver his tribute, offering to the Survivor Gods before the season started? One has to wonder what someone did to anger them as they are none too happy this season. Survivor players are quickly becoming an endangered species on those remote Mamanuca Islands. Last week we saw Kellee and Jamal get chopped and this week two more castaways were mercilessly fed to the sharks.

A twist none of the players bargained for or planned for had them scrambling like squirrels in a rain storm. At the Immunity Challenge, the Lumuwaku Tribe was abruptly divided into two separate teams. The orange team consisted of Missy, Tommy, Elaine, Elizabeth and Karishma. The purple team was Dean, Dan, Lauren, Aaron, Noura and Janet. Not only did they compete against each other for a reward but they went to Tribal Council in those groups and just like last week, there were two Immunity Idols up for grabs which Noura and Elaine won.

Survivor, you are truly evil.

The King Kong-sized wrench thrown into the works obliterated everyone’s best laid plans. Karishma and Janet breathed massive sighs of relief as they dodged what looked like certain doom. Aaron Meredith, who had won individual immunity twice in a row since the merge, was the purple team’s clear and present danger and no-brainer target while Missy imploded her game by playing like Conan the Barbarian, swinging her battle axe around camp in a berserker rage instead of being stealthy like Snake Eyes.

Go, Joes!

Two power players who thought they had the game all figured out, all planned out, are now hanging out with Jack, Kellee and Jamal at Ponderosa wondering how things went so terribly wrong for them.

What is curious about the vote is that the entire purple team voted against Aaron while orange was a split vote with Elaine, Karishma and Tommy writing down Missy’s name and Elizabeth, Missy voting for Tommy.

“You realize now that you gotta kill Elaine. You understand me?” was Missy’s advice to Elizabeth before she eventually made her way over to Probst to finally get her torch snuffed.

That would be good advice as many have underestimated the scrappy Kentucky Survivor. With Aaron and Missy gone one wonders if Elizabeth will even have the votes to even save herself?

Week 9: Game Fail – Missy Byrd and Aaron Meredith

The alphas have been given the axe. To Aaron, it was no surprise at all. He knew that as soon as he didn’t win immunity he was done like dinner. Missy was too heavy-handed in her bid to control the game. When your own allies are tired of being herded like sheep, your game is coming to an end.

Strategic Gameplay

Missy had a great understanding of the tribal politics and how to exploit them to benefit her game. The problem with that is when the numbers started to dwindle her allies began seeing that Missy was doing what was best for her and perhaps not what was best for them. If you are going to take the wheel in Survivor your passengers better be happy with your driving skills and the final destination.

Aaron did the best he could under the circumstances. When you don’t have the numbers on your side and you are a competition threat, your options are limited. Aaron did have decent strategic sense. Most of the time he just didn’t have the power to pull them off.

Missy Rating: 4 / 5
Aaron Rating: 2.5 / 5

Social Gameplay

The test of both their social games came when the island became less inhabited and there was nobody to hide behind any more. Their influence waned and the spotlight was shone on their gameplay.

Missy Rating: 3 / 5
Aaron Rating: 2.5 / 5

Entertainment Value

From a gameplay and drama standpoint, Missy had Aaron beat. She had far more personality, far better gameplay and wasn’t afraid to confront others. Aaron was just kinda there. That’s probably because he wasn’t in a position of power for long.

Missy Rating: 4.5 / 5
Aaron Rating: 3 / 5

Missy: Final Rating: 11.5 / 15
Final Castaway Rating: 8 / 15

Week 9: Powell’s Picks

Who played it cool and who proved themselves to be a fool? Every week John Powell makes his picks for the worst and best players of the week.

Bronze Amateur: Noura Salman

Blowing the challenge only reinforced how chaotic an ally she is.

Silver Amateur: Aaron Meredith

He relied on winning challenges rather than building better bonds.

Gold Amateur: Missy Byrd

She should have been flying a drone instead of a loud, noisy bomber that couldn’t fly under the radar.

Bronze MVP: Karishma Patel

Whether you are a fan or not, Karishma pushed back and was one of the factors why Missy was pushed out.

Silver MVP: Janet Carbin

She wasn’t going down without a fight. Her moves this episode could end up saving her entire game.

Gold MVP: Elaine Stott

She not only won immunity but she flipped things at the orange team.
