When you go to war, you need a loyal army. An army that just won’t support you when things are going your way but more importantly when things aren’t.

Elizabeth Beisel, the Olympic swimmer, had both of her lieutenants Missy Byrd and Aaron Meredith voted out last week at the surprise double Tribal Council. Alone and without a back-up plan, it was pretty much settled that unless there was some kind of flip in the tribal politics that she would soon be taking her seat on this season’s jury. Karishma Patel forcing a tie with her Immunity Idol just completely tipped over Elizabeth’s hour glass.

Based on her challenge record, the fact that everyone except for Elizabeth voted against her and the state of her social game, Karishma is the next to get her torch snuffed unless another one of those Immunity Idols, which these days are taking the place of decent gameplay, pops up. One has to wonder how well any of the modern Survivor players would do if there were no Hidden Immunity Idols and they had to rely on their social and strategic games like every player and winner had to before Survivor: Guatemala aired. I suspect many of them would never have made it as far as they did and some might never have even won the game.

What was curious about last night’s vote is why Elizabeth would vote for Janet? One can only assume that she and Karishma were in cahoots, believed Elizabeth might have a Hidden Immunity Idol and were splitting the votes. You have to know though your Survivor game is hitting the skids when Karishma is your closest ally.

Of everyone who is left Tommy Sheehan and Lauren Beck seem to be in the best spot if they can also drag Dean Kowalski along with them as that third dispensable vote. I have this nagging feeling that someone like Elaine Stott or Janet Carbin could slip through into the finals if they’re not careful though.

On last night’s episode we saw another instance of players rummaging through another player’s private belongings. After 38 seasons, I will never understand how it is permitted in the Survivor rules. Something just seems wrong about rifling through someone’s private property without their permission.

Week 10: Game Fail – Elizabeth Beisel

Being flexible and being able to adapt is a vital part of the Survivor game. Elizabeth was intractable. She put all of her eggs in one basket never giving a thought to keeping her options open or having that secondary plan of action. Her only two allies were also hulking targets in the game that never played discretely. Her Survivor blueprint was a recipe for disaster.

Strategic Gameplay

We all should have known something was up when Elizabeth decided to challenge Boston Rob [Mariano] to a fire-making challenge and then lost. Elizabeth didn’t really exercise a lot of good judgement during the game, like sticking with Missy and Aaron to the end. Her tactics of making exaggerated claims against Dan Spilo to get him voted out and searching through someone’s private property were some of her questionable and controversial decisions.

Rating: 2 / 5

Social Gameplay

The whole Dan debacle and even her actions before that didn’t seem to be particularly endearing, they definitely hurt her social interactions.

Rating: 2 / 5

Entertainment Value

Her contentious strategies and her willingness to do anything to win the game shaped Elizabeth into a villain. Although, not the type of mischievous baddie that plays the game while impishly winking at the audience letting them know it was all in good fun.

Rating: 3 / 5

Final Castaway Rating: 7 / 15

Week 10: Powell’s Picks

Who played it cool and who proved themselves to be a fool? Every week John Powell makes his picks for the worst and best players of the week.

Bronze Amateur: Karishma Patel

She should have used the idol to pull others onto her side to somehow work her way into an alliance instead of taking a defiant stand on her own. That may be admirable in the real world but not in the game of Survivor when you are isolating yourself even further.

Silver Amateurs: Everyone who ate during the Immunity Challenge

With only nine people left in the game why would you risk a million dollars and the title of Sole-Survivor over a single meal? It was a very arrogant and foolish decision considering that Survivor is a game that can change at any moment.

Gold Amateur: Elizabeth Beisel

Her strategy was intractable and uncompromising.

survivor-cast-karishma-patel-season-39-island-of-the-idols

Bronze MVP: Karishma Patel

She played the situation well although, with that many votes against her she is probably delaying the inevitable.

survivor-cast-tommy-sheehan-season-39-island-of-the-idols

Silver MVP: Tommy Sheehan

One of the, if not THE most dangerous player left in the game keeps on trucking and gathering up allies.

survivor-cast-lauren-beck-season-39-island-of-the-idols

Gold MVP: Lauren Beck

Not only did she win that Immunity Idol but she also made crucial in-roads for her alliance with Tommy. She appeared to really take the wheel this episode.
