John Powell – GlobalTV.com

As Jeff Probst said himself a David is someone who hasn’t been given any advantages. They have to scratch and claw throughout their lives just to get ahead, just to survive. If you are just tuning into Survivor: David vs. Goliath, you would have to be forgiven if you thought the David Tribe were the Goliaths and vice versa considering all of the advantages in play. Another week, another Tribal Council and another player gets taken out of the game due to an advantage. Actually, make that multiple advantages.

Poof! It is gone. The numbers advantage the Goliaths had coming into the merger has now been erased due to the Davids cleverly playing their advantages. With Alison Raybould’s vote stolen and Dan Rengering’s Hidden Immunity Idol nullified, Dan was a sitting duck.

CATCH UP NOW: Survivor Episode 9: “Breadth-First Search | Season 37: David vs. Goliath

Like John before him last week, Dan really didn’t make too many cardinal Survivor errors. He and the rest of the Goliaths just got outplayed and the advantages had much to do with that. In a game like Survivor it is hard to call such situations “unfair” as the Goliaths themselves could have snapped up those advantages as well, it just so happens that they didn’t.

What happened to both Dan and John Hennigan wasn’t unfair. To some, it was unbalanced gameplay with so many advantages and Hidden Immunity Idols scattered about.  When that happens, the game becomes less about the surreptitious, social mind games Survivor is known for and more about deploying and timing the advantages properly. Manipulating, guiding people along based on social bonds, reason or deception takes a back seat to taking an advantage out of your pocket at Tribal Council at just the right time.

The scattered disloyalty that has run through the Goliaths made its presence felt again as well when Kara Kay aligned herself with the Davids in putting votes on Angelina Keeley. Kara felt she needed to distance herself from Dan and pondered jumping ship. It is now clear to everyone that she has. How the remaining Goliaths will feel about that double-dealing and whether they will be in the position to do anything about it will surface during the fallout next episode.

Why have the Goliaths fallen so hard and so fast? As John and other Goliaths have pointed out since their departures, there were just too many alpha personalities, too many wannabe leaders, too many people who wanted to be and had to be in control and that caused the alliance to fracture. It is difficult to move forward as a unified force when some are pulling in opposite directions due to their own personal agendas. Will the Goliaths be able to overlook the past and put the band back together? Stay tuned.

Week 9: Game Fail – Dan Rengering

survivor-dan-rengering

Dan was rightfully accused of playing with his heart and not his head. He was a very emotional player who wore his heart on his sleeve. While that is something many people cannot help, it can be an exploitable vulnerability on Survivor and had led to many a castaway’s demise.

Strategic Gameplay

survivor-dan-rengering-john-hennigan-kara-kay

Dan wasn’t really a powerhouse as far as strategy was concerned. He got into a public showmance tipping his hand early. He would often bring up targets only to follow the leader when the consensus changed. He wasted an idol to save Angelina when he perhaps should have kept it for himself. If he had, tonight’s Tribal Council might have ended differently.

Social Gameplay

survivor-dan-rengering

Not caring what implications his relationship with Kara had on her game or his own was a massive miscalculation and misstep for Dan. He made honest connections with John, Christian and a host of others. Perhaps if he had pulled in more Davids he would have fared better.

Entertainment Value

Dan was a nice enough guy but besides his occasional meltdown or his relationship with Kara and John, he was a figure in the background. Besides his amazing personal transformation we didn’t learn much about him as a person.

Final Castaway Rating: 7/ 15
