Before we discuss this week’s episode we have to take a minute to recognize something or should I say someone.

Even if she doesn’t win the game Noelle Lambert has opened the eyes of a lot of people with that outstanding performance during the immunity challenge. I mean, we should expect nothing less from a Paralympian but running on a track is nowhere near the same as dashing across, climbing slippery, floating rafts without the support of her artificial leg and blade. Her effort shows that your determination can take you places even if your body is failing you because of age, injury or a personal setback.

Speaking to The Concord Monitor while she was training for the Paralympic Olympic Games in 2021, she said about her moped accident:

“I did not want to let the accident define my life and the rest of my life. I had tough moments, but I never wanted to show it, and that is my stubborn self.”

I guess the challenge was just another “tough moment” for the “stubborn” Noelle. I think we could all benefit from a little of that “stubbornness” in our own lives.

Noelle surviving the tribal council vote because she impressed her fellow tribemates was the perfect ending to her journey on episode three. The same cannot be said for Nneka or the entire Vesi tribe who made their second trip in a row to tribal council. When there are three small tribes any time someone drops the ball in a challenge it is a big deal. There is no place to hide for the person who came up short. It speaks volumes about the Vesi’s desperation that Jesse and Cody were willing to sacrifice an ally in order to exit tribal council stronger than they entered. One has to believe that if Vesi tanks another immunity challenge that it might be time for the producers to blend three tribes into two.

Although she completed the challenge presented to her with flying colours I don’t blame Karla for balking at the Beware opportunity at first. Correctly weighing risk versus reward, like Vesi did at tribal council, is a crucial part of being successful at Survivor. If I was confident in my position in the game I would have passed it up too. For me, risking my vote when I am in such a small tribe where every ballot at tribal council means so much is not worth it. A bigger tribe? That would be a different story for sure.

Keeping game theory in mind, I would be careful about taking risks just because my confidence is high at the time as you have to always be aware that the goal of the producers is to present big risks for big rewards to make the show more exciting and the risks more inciting. Losing your vote in a bigger, more fractured tribe is less harmful than when a tribe only consists of a handful of players. In that scenario the honeymoon is over as you are already in a pre-merge scenario where avoiding Jeff Probst and tribal council should be the top priority as you have so few tribemates to lose.

Last week I had my say on Elie and Jeanine rummaging through Gabler’s bag looking for the terms of his immunity idol. If you are going to do something like that it is probably best not to be spotted by other people as we all know that friends can quickly become enemies in Survivor. Elie’s pals appear to be her foes now and her decision to take such drastic action is looking like it will come back to possibly sink her game. Stay tuned folks.

Next time on Survivor…

Nneka Ejere

Nneka is an incredibly nice person but nice people aren’t always the best people to be playing a cutthroat game like Survivor. I would think that since her social game was so good she probably would have done far better on a regular season with only two tribes.

Strategic Gameplay

While she was in an alliance of sorts she wasn’t the one driving the bus. She was a passenger.

She really endears herself to the entire tribe. She probably had the strongest social game on the island.

Nneka presented a different look not only at the Survivor game but also at American culture and society. It is too bad we didn’t get to hear more of her observations.

Who played it cool and who proved themselves to be a fool? Every week John Powell makes his picks for the worst and best players of the week.

The perception of Mike is that he is lagging, he is becoming weaker. I don’t think he is long for this game.

Elie got caught with her hand in the cookie jar. The trust some have in her is fading fast.

Nneka was either too confident in her alliance or she didn’t play strong enough…or maybe a bit of both.

Karla has stepped up her game. She could be a contender.

By throwing Elie under the bus Sami has changed the complexion of the Baka tribe.

Jesse and Cody made a hard decision but perhaps a decision that could save the Vesi tribe from extinction.
