WINTER SPECIALS
FRIDAY, MARCH 1
10 p.m. – ¬ The New Reality
“A Special Report: Indigenous Kids in Care”
More than 50 insiders from Ontario’s child welfare system have told Global News they believe something sinister is at play: that private, for-profit group home companies are intentionally targeting or charging more to care for Indigenous youth – to increase profits. A detailed analysis by Global News backs up those concerns, showing Indigenous children’s aid societies in the North, with few resources close to home, are being charged higher prices, on average, than non-Indigenous agencies. What’s more, former workers and youths say the “care” children receive for that money sometimes leaves them more damaged than when they arrived. And it’s not just happening in one province, stunning data analysis shows the Government of Nunavut is being billed much higher prices on average, than in Ontario. Global News’ sweeping, year-long investigation travels to remote communities and speaks with dozens of former workers to reveal claims that companies are allegedly preying off the vulnerability of these communities, who have few, if any, options at home. They say youth are being moved south, ripped of their culture in a haunting echo of residential schools.
