It’s that special time of year again – time to gather and celebrate with your loved ones that it’s once again the time of year that a new Star Wars movies hits cinemas. And what better way to celebrate than watching Mark Hamill on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert?

That’s one heck of a Harrison Ford impression in that video, isn’t it? The Ed Sullivan Theater’s rowdy Friday night crowd was warm to receive Luke Skywalker himself for his first Late Show appearance. And you know who was even warmer? Stephen Colbert. He was elated by Hamill’s presence – and who wouldn’t be? Mark Hamill is not only Luke Skywalker- pinnacle hero for every boy of Colbert’s generation-  but also a super sweet guy. He seemed genuinely excited to be on The Late Show and looked as though he was having so much fun. Take, for instance, the pre-interview sketch he and Colbert did together, in which Hamill reprises his role as Luke Skywalker.

This sketch was basically Stephen Colbert nerding out for four minutes, just stacked with Star Wars and other sci-fi references – the most dense of which, if you didn’t catch it, is Colbert’s character referring to “Luke Starkiller” – a nod to Luke Skywalker’s original name in the original draft of Star Wars.

Star Wars fandom aside, Mark Hamill is appreciated in another huge fandom. Batman. Because, if you didn’t know, he has voiced The Joker for over 25 years now, since The Joker’s first appearance in Batman: The Animated Series. Many say that Hamill’s Joker is the best, beating out the likes of greats Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger (and not-so-great Jared Leto).

With The Last Jedi hitting cinemas next week, there’s tons of speculation floating abound – especially regarding Mark Hamill’s character Luke Skywalker. What’s  his deal? Why did Luke basically quit life? Will he be successful in training Rey? Who really shot first on that fateful day in the Mos Eisley Cantina (Luke was there and can provide eye-witness testimony, you know)?

Unfortunately you’ll have to wait for the answers to those (and there will probably never be an official, or at least acceptable, answer to that last one). The powers-that-be (Disney, of course) are keeping The Last Jedi pretty hush-hush, and the actors making media rounds aren’t able to spill any beans. Thus, no beans were spilled on The Late Show last night. The film releases on Thursday December 14th at midnight – the same night that Adam Driver will be Stephen’s guest on The Late Show. So if you don’t already have your opening night tickets to The Last Jedi, catch The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday December 14th at 11.35 et/pt on Global to maybe get some juicy tidbits from Adam Driver. It is release night, so maybe the Disney tidbit embargo will be off.

Colbert did raise an interesting personal question for Hamill, asking him what was it like to miss out on the Star Wars mania? While Hamill didn’t have the Star Wars experience, he had his own, wonderful and unique experience with Star Wars thanks to his fans.

And that’s what makes Star Wars special in the end, its fans. Because no franchise lives through three trilogies, several television series and hundreds of books, video games, comics, and toys without a dedicated and loving fanbase.
