We have our final five. Victoria Baamonde, Rick Devens, Lauren O’Connell, Julie Rosenberg, and Gavin Whitson will brawl for it all to become the sole -survivor on next Wednesday’s finale of Survivor: Edge of Extinction.

This season’s finale is not as straightforward as it might appear though as we will have a final six not a final five. The winner of the last Edge of Extinction competition will win their way back into the game. This could prove to be a wrench in the plans of many of the finalists depending on who that returnee is.

It would make sense that players who have been out of the game for some time like Reem Daly, Chris Underwood, Aubry Bracco, Joe Anglim, Eric Hafemann, and Julia Carter probably don’t have much of a chance of winning the entire game unlike David Wright, Kelley Wentworth, Dan “The Wardog” DaSilva, Ron Clark or Aurora McCreary who are recent boots. Still, anyone who rejoins the game could play the role of spoiler tipping the scales one way or another against the other finalists. They could have a major impact even if they themselves don’t have a hope in swaying the jury.

Since we aren’t aware of what the final extinction challenge will be it is hard to guess who will win but based on past performances Joe, David, and Aurora probably have the best chance of pulling off a win. Aurora would seem to have the lead on anyone as she is fresh from the competition and is still in full fight mode unlike the others who have been in a far different headspace, on pause while on Extinction Island.

Who will win their way back into the game and who will win the season? Stay tuned.

Next time on Survivor

Week 12: Aurora McCreary

She clung to Joe but once that security blanket was ripped right out from under her, she rose to the challenge playing one of the best games this season. She adapted, shifted and evolved her game as the circumstances changed around her. It’s astounding how long she lasted with such a massive target on her back.

Strategic Gameplay

She blundered things sticking to Joe as long as she did. She did turn things around though finding way after way to shift the target onto others or help push the tribal politics this way or that.

Rating: 3 / 5

Social Gameplay

In order for her to twist and tilt as she did, Aurora had to have decent bonds with her fellow survivors. Though they viewed her as a threat they still trusted her and that says a lot about her social game.

Rating: 3 / 5

Entertainment Value

At the start, she was just a cheerleader for Joe, hitching her wagon to a challenge beast. We got to really see what Aurora was made of when she struck out on her own having to make new relationships late in the game. It would be interesting to see her return to Survivor as I suspect she would play the game a lot stronger.

Final Castaway Rating: 9.5 / 15

Week 12: Powell’s Picks

Who played it cool and who proved themselves to be a fool? Every week John Powell makes his picks for the worst and best players of the week.

Bronze Amateur: Rick Devens

I’m not sure how much of his antics at Tribal Council or his criticism of the other players will sit with the jury. He sure isn’t making any friends with the people left in the game, except for Julie and even that is out of necessity.

Silver Amateur: Julie Rosenberg

She doesn’t have much game except to stick to someone, anyone.

Gold Amateur: Gavin Whitson, Lauren O’Connell, and Victoria Baamonde.

They totally misplayed the situation at Tribal Council. Despite Devens’ bravado they should have stuck to their guns and voted out Julie. With someone coming back they needed to keep their four strong and not just throw up their hands, give into Devens’ threats.

Bronze MVP: Victoria Baamonde

Is showing some signs that she might have what it takes to strike out on her own and shake the game up.

Silver MVP: Julie Rosenberg

She played her role well keeping Devens on point.

Gold MVP: Rick Devens

Finding an idol, baffling the others at Tribal Council, building a strong relationship with Julie, Devens had a great episode.
