Much to my surprise, Toronto native Erika Casupanan has flipped the game. The 32-year-old communications manager decided to break the hour glass given to her by host/producer Jeff Probst, turn her back on the Luvu tribe and in doing so reversed the fortunes of every player left in the game.

Evvie, Sydney, Naseer, Ricard, Deshawn and Danny lost the immunity they had won while Liana, Shan, Tiffany, Xander and Heather became safe from the tribal council vote.

Fair or unfair Erika’s decision paved the way for Sydney’s exit from the game. As for what price Erika might pay for her decision, the future is cloudy. While the others were scrambling and re calibrating at a live tribal council, she was seen sitting on her own for a time.

“I cannot believe I am actually here and there is actual whispering around me,” she said to Probst.

Erika was then seen in a huddle with Shan, DeShawn, Danny, Liana, Naseer and Heather, some of the people she had just betrayed. Is she in league with them or was she just a hanger-on?

From the division at tribal council it could very well be Xander, Evvie and Tiffany against basically everyone else. That, however, might not be the case especially with Naseer going rogue at tribal council and plotting to vote out DeShawn at one point. For that public betrayal he very well could be on the chopping block next week. I have a sneaky suspicion that the alliance lines are not set in stone just yet and we might see some movement especially from Erika and Shan who have been clear that they will do what is best for their game always. Danny chatting secretly with Tiffany in the promo for next week also opened the possibility that new partnerships and alliances might emerge from the fallout of the very chaotic tribal council we just witnessed.

Along with Erika, Shan was also front and center this episode but perhaps for all the wrong reasons. She could be painting a massive target on her back from not only taking the lead here and there back at camp but also at tribal where she continued to speak for the group alerting Probst when they were finished debating and also when they wanted to vote. Stepping into the forefront like that can not only rub people the wrong way but give the other castaways the perception that you are the mastermind, the leader, the one in control. That is never a good thing at the midway phase of the game where you are trying to not be on everyone’s mind as a clear and present danger.

Xander’’s fake-out eliminated perhaps the most powerful advantage in the game. It sure was one of the most clever uses of a bogus idol we have ever seen. You can bet though that Liana will not forget how Xander and Evvie bamboozled her, mocked her and made a fool out of her at tribal. That grudge match should be one to watch as the game and series moves forward.

Where will all of these chips fall?

Stay tuned.

Sydney Segal

If there is one thing that “There’s Gonna Be Blood” proved is how low on the Luvu totem pole Sydney was. Her social game certainly wasn’t was a strong or as influential as she thought it was especially when faced with a possible gender divide being pushed by Danny and Deshawn a few episodes ago.

Strategic Gameplay

Sydney was not wilting wallflower. She managed to turn Luvu on Naseer and was a point person, a major part of Luvu’s strategic decisions.

Rating: 3 / 5

Social Gameplay

Her bonds with Danny and Deshawn were so strong that they sided with her when Erika suggested voting her out. Whatever relationship she had with them though wasn’t enough to put her before Naseer in the pecking order.

Rating: 3 / 5

Entertainment Value

Sydney was a fearless player and an unapologetic-ally spirited personality. Her lively personality really did bring the drama to the series. I hope we get to see her again in future.

Rating: 3 / 5

Final Castaway Rating: 9 / 15

Erika’s move might have saved her game. It might have sunk it. We will have to wait and see what happens.

Not being truthful about her advantage to everyone has already begun having ramifications on her game.

Her social game failed her and failed her badly.

She was clearly the one leading the strategy at tribal council. It was her suggestion that they split the vote.

Xander

He pulled a massive blindside forcing those who were against him at tribal council to take out one of their own.
