Lady Luck must have been sitting on Deshawn Radden’s shoulder. He dodged the biggest bullet fired by the Survivor producers this season.

At the immunity challenge, Jeff Probst introduced a new twist. The Survivors were given the choice to play for immunity or not. If they did play but were the first out in the balancing challenge they would have to play a Do or Die game at tribal council. If they lost that, they would automatically go home and there would be no vote.

While Heather and Liana elected to sit out, Deshawn, Danny, Erika, Ricard and Xander played. Deshawn went out first much to his dismay.

Deshawn’s Do or Die challenge presented him with a version of the infamous Monty Hall probability puzzle used often on the gameshow Let’s Make A Deal. Deshawn had to pick one of three boxes. One contained a flame symbol which represented safety and immunity for him. Two contained a skull which represented the end of the road for Deshawn.

Deshawn picked the first box and Probst opened the third which contained a skull. Probst then pulled a Monty Hall and offered Deshawn a choice. He could keep the box he originally selected or he could trade it for the unopened box. In game theory, it was actually better for Deshawn to make the switch because he would have had approximately 2/3 chance of picking the flame and by sticking to his original choice he had 1/3 chance of picking the flame according to mathematicians who have forgotten more about the discipline than I will ever know. ‘

Deshawn stuck to his choice, beat the odds and returned to the game…just in time to see Liana take her seat on the jury.

Xander, who had been at odds with Liana throughout the entire season, figured heavily into the plot to boot Liana. He not only convinced swing vote Erika to feed Liana to the fishes but he used his extra vote to make sure the tribal council vote went the way he wanted it to.

As the swing vote this episode and the central person many were conferring with about this vote and the others before it, Erika’s value or stock in the game has risen substantially. If she can be that critical power player who is guiding the votes she does have a good chance of not only making it to the end but also perhaps winning this season. If she does, she will be the first Canadian to do so.

Stay tuned.

Next time on Survivor:

Liana Wallace

In one week’s time the Survivor game has been flipped on its head. Last week we saw Shan, who is undeniably one of the best players to ever step foot on the beach, leave the game. This week we have the opposite in Liana. Besides her feud with Xander and her sisterly bond with Shan, Liana wasn’t much of a power player in any way. In the wider scope of things, she is a step up from Heather as she appeared to be more active in the wheeling and dealings but she was just not a major force.

Strategic Gameplay

Besides the strategic and personal relationship she formed with Shan, Liana was more of a follower than a leader. She did take it upon herself to search Xander’s bag for any advantages he might have and decided to ditch the Yase alliance at the merger while her plan to steal Xander’s advantage blew up in her face at tribal council.

Rating: 2 / 5

Social Gameplay

This was the strongest facet of Liana’s game. She secured many important and beneficial relationships throughout her ups and downs in the game which allowed her to evolve her gameplay when she needed to the most.

Rating: 3.5 / 5

Entertainment Value

Like Heather, Liana was mostly just existing on the island. Besides her feuds with Xander and Deshawn which brought out a fire in her and her emotional bond with Shan, Liana was nice to get to know as a personality on the show but her presence didn’t enhance season 41.

Final Rating: 7.5 / 15

Who played it cool and who proved themselves to be a fool? Every week John Powell makes his picks for the worst and best players of the week.

He continues to just float along, going wherever the wind takes her in the game.

Ricard didn’t successful defend himself as Deshawn flipped things on him.

With strong social game she was a one trick pony and she elected not to play in the immunity challenge.

Deshawn put the blame where it belonged when it came to the Shan vote at camp and in front of the jury. He also smoothed things over with Ricard. He didn’t allow the pressure of the Do or Die twist sink his game.

Erika positioned herself as the swing vote and in doing so appeared to hitch her wagon to the numbers. She continues to build that resume.

Xander

He finally took out Liana although a big part of that was convincing Erika to leave Ricard in the game, a high profile target for her.
