Stephen Colbert Interviews Michael Wolff, Author Of Fire And Fury

CORTE MADERA, CA - JANUARY 05: Copies of the book "Fire and Fury" by author Michael Wolff are displayed on a shelf at Book Passage on January 5, 2018 in Corte Madera, California. A controversial new book about the inner workings of the Trump administration hit bookstore shelves nearly a week earlier than anticipated after lawyers for Donald Trump issued a cease and desist letter to publisher Henry Holt & Co. Last night Stephen welcomed Michael Wolff to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, author of Fire and Fury, the new book that everyone has been dissecting.

Wolff’s book contains his observations on the current White House. A little backstory: when Donald Trump first entered office, Wolff offered to write the book on his administration. The offer was accepted, and Wolff spent months just hanging around the White House asking questions and generally being someone to lean on/a shoulder to cry on/an on-the-record confessional. Not even a year later, it’s all in print, and boy is it embarrassing for President Trump.

Check out just a few of the more shocking and revealing things Fire and Fury has to say:

It seems like a lot of mud-slinging, name-calling and other childish tantrums were going on within the walls of Donald Trump’s White House. With members of the administration plotting against each other so quickly and carelessly, how was Wolff able to discern who was being honest? Surely, Steve Bannon is willing to fib to the public to boost his political position in America… actually, that could be said about anybody in Trump’s inner circle. Was there a litmus test Wolff used to detect the truthiness of his subjects?

So Wolff had to fact check for himself, but what about the readers? His audience has to fact check Wolff. It’s a good thing that Stephen Colbert is around to watch out for the political junkies, aka his loyal Late Show viewers.

Stephen, as he usually does with even the least controversial of guests on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, turned up the heat on Wolff. A lot of what is being said about the author and the book by the White House is that it’s… well, it’s said so often that’s it seems to have Voldemort-level infamy, so it rhymes with “Cake Pews,” and let’s leave it at that. Many other, more legitimate and trustworthy news and media outlets suggest a bit more mildly that Michael Wolff is known to embellish facts, and occasionally alter them to his own interpretation. Knowing this, Stephen didn’t want to just put on a dog and pony show for this potential snake oil salesman, and gave him the once over, grilling Wolff on why the public should trust his printed word over the White House’s.

What did Wolff have to say to that? He says, ask yourself: “Does this story make sense?”

Yeah, yeah it pretty much does. Well played Wolff.
