Last night Stephen welcomed his old frenemy Ricky Gervais to talk about morbid stuff on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Maybe “frenemy” isn’t the right word for these two – they’re contemporaries who seem to like and respect each other. But boy have they gone at it when it comes to talking about religion. Gervais really goes all out for atheism around Stephen, who is known to be a devout Catholic.

But this time around, they only got into benign, less controversial subject matter, like dying, and what happens after (and also weird animals like octopuses and platypuses for some reason).

Yeah, Gervais came out swinging for the fences, if in this case the fences is making the audience uncomfortable by forcing them to think about their own mortality.

He got right into just how futile it all seems, so if you’re feeling down, maybe don’t watch this clip of Ricky Gervais talking about how every appearance on The Late Show could be his last.

If you’re not familiar with Gervais, he got his big start with the British version (AKA the original version) of The Office – if you’re familiar with the American remake, then undoubtedly you’ve seen his name in the credits. Since, he has starred in many Hollywood movies and created many more TV shows, like Extras, Derek, and his most recent one, After Life – hence the subject matter of the interview.

Gervais is also well known for his cheekiness – but not the round dimpled apples on his face. He’s an instigator – he does and says the things that will get a legitimate rise out of people. However, despite this, Gervais reveals he has a heart, and a pretty good one. He’s widely known as a man with no faith, but on The Late Show he opened up to say that he has faith in people. That’s really got to warm your heart!

Gervais just kept steering the conversation to death, dying, being dead etc. that Stephen had to give in and go with it. Topic of choice? How they imagine dying. As in, how they imagine they will die, and what that will be like. Late night television isn’t supposed to put you to sleep, but come on – it’s not supposed to keep you awake either.

When these two get together, good things happen. Or at least interesting things.

Chalk this one up as interesting.
