Canadian comedic treasure Mike Meyers made an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this Halloween to talk a lot about classic rock.

Typically when you hear the words “Halloween” and “Mike Meyers” together, you think of a different dude entirely. You know, that guy with the greasy hair, spooky Shatner mask and butcher knife who walks really fast and kills a lot of teenagers. But this Mike Meyers only kills with comedy – you probably know him from Austin Powers, Wayne’s World,  Shrek and of course Saturday Night Live.

For this Halloween, Meyers dressed up as “the English guy with the umbrella” from the movie A Bridge Too Far. Who would have guessed? Seriously, did anyone guess that?

Mike Meyers is featured in the highly-anticipated upcoming Queen/Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. Briefly, but, on a meta-level, significantly: he plays a record executive who tries to tell Queen that the song Bohemian Rhapsody should not be a radio single. There’s so much irony to this role: one, in 1992, Meyers contributed to Bohemian Rhapsody charting for the second time, 17 year after its initial release, by featuring it in Wayne’s World. The second layer of the irony cake is the story behind how it got in that movie in the first place:

That’s a lot of Toronto-area reference dropping, isn’t it?

While it wouldn’t have been weird to not include Meyers in Bohemian Rhapsody, it is certainly fitting and appropriate to have him be a part of that film, and especially in that role. Wayne’s World was significant in introducing Queen to a younger generation, and in making Bohemian Rhapsody Queen’s flagship song. In a roundabout way, Meyers probably unintentionally influenced the naming of the film. That’s got to be a badge of honour for a guy who launched his career parodying 1980s metalheads.

And since Mike Meyers and Stephen Colbert were already on the topic of classic rock icons, and Meyers’ family is from Liverpool, Meyers came loaded with a great George Harrison story. Meyers is apparently the recipient of the last-ever written letter by the Beatle before he died.

Not a lot of people can brag a good George Harrison story, much less such a significant one. Kudos to him, and hopefully he returns to The Late Show very soon because he was a wonderful guest!
