Wednesday on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci and Stormy Daniels’ lawyer Michael Avenatti will be palling around and talking talk with Stephen Colbert.

Who are these guys? Well here’s the quick rundown: last summer Anthony Scaramucci took over for Sean Spicer as President Trump’s White House Communications Director. He didn’t even last two weeks after going on an aggressive media rampage, tossing insults at his White House colleagues and even going as far to suggest that Steve Bannon is able to fold himself in half for a very specific reason. Michael Avenatti is the lawyer of adult film actor Stormy Daniels, who is currently suing President Trump. Scaramucci is still very much team Trump. Avenatti is very much not.

These two New York tough guys will be on The Late Show in tandem. Why? Well, why not? These two aggressive, media thirsty bros (in the colloquial sense) make for good television. And that’s why they’re on The Late Show – to make good television, and to promote making good television. Maybe. The rumour is they’re shopping around a television show featuring the two of them, and CNN seems to be at least a little interested. But both dudes have publicly denied that this TV show is going to happen, so who knows?

Either way, they’ve been publicly spotted being bros together. Still, that’s not usually reason enough for Stephen to have a double-billed guest slot – that goes for teams who are specifically promoting something, like last week’s episode with Bill Clinton and James Patterson. So it’s worth speculating why they’ve been double booked.

Both men have appeared on The Late Show before. Michael Avenatti was good at working the crowd, saying all the right things to have Colbert’s audience eating out of the palm of his hand. Here he is laying out his plan to legally take down Trump:

Scaramucci on the other hand was on The Late Show after his firing, but provided little more than something to laugh at, as he dodged Stephen’s classic tough questions and doubled down on backing the man who fired him, Donald Trump.

But, Avenatti and Scaramucci seem to be pals, hanging out and sharing laughs at New York parties (at least, that’s what all the gossip rags are reporting). Their pseudo-celebrity status birthed out of being tangentially tied to President Trump seems to be working in both their favours (Avenatti more so than Scaramucci), and both are media savvy. They know how to get people talking through methods unique to their own styles. What they’ll do and what they’ll say on The Late Show is a puzzle, but one that’s worth checking out, at least for curiosity’s sake.
