If you tuned in to last night’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which you should have, you were given the treat of watching another one of the famous and wonderful Colbert/Biden interviews (that’s Joe Biden, former Vice President of the USA, if you didn’t already know  which you would have if, again, you watched the show like you should have).

He has such a “dad” sense of humour, doesn’t he?

If you’ve caught one of the many episodes of The Late Show that features Joe Biden, you know that Joe Biden gives the best interviews. He’s got this amazing rapport with Colbert – and while Colbert has many regular guests that he noticeably gets on with very well, Like Neil deGrasse Tyson or Bernie Sanders, his dynamic with Joe Biden is unique. They may not share the same kind of friendship, as in the case of deGrasse Tyson,  but Stephen respects the heck out of Biden, and it’s apparent that the feeling is mutual.

Right away Stephen hits him with Trump. Recall that the last time Biden was across the desk, he said that everyone was obliged to give the former reality star a “clear shot to do the job.” Biden isn’t one to go back on his words, but we exist within a different context now than we did a year ago: so much has happened, ranging from hilarious, to cringey, to appalling, to truly terrifying. Specifically, Biden raises the issue of the Charlottesville Nazi rally that happened in August of this year, and the Trump administration’s reaction to it. Biden describes Trump’s inability to condemn hate as reprehensible, saying that America is fighting for the soul of the country.

The quote of the night, though, has to be when Colbert asked Biden how he thinks the current presidency will influence future presidencies. Biden’s response? “The single exception in American history.”

Vice President Biden’s first appearance on The Late Show two years ago was very raw. As we know, the death of Joe Biden’s son had a deep impact on him, ultimately guiding him away from running for President. He opens up about it in his new book, Promise Me Dad, which he candidly talks about with Colbert. He shared his experience on the situation in a way that only he could share.

It was hardly a disappointing interview.

Well, there was one disappointing omission – are we ever going to find out about that two-on-two basketball game?
