Last night on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Lupita Nyong’o shared her experiences about starring in Jordan Peele’s much anticipated directorial follow-up to Get Out, his new film Us.

Lupita Nyong’o is such a delight, as well as an incredibly talented actor: from gaining mainstream attention from 12 Years a Slave (and winning an Oscar for it), to being in the new Star Wars trilogy and, of course, her role in last year’s biggest film Black Panther. She’s been on The Late Show many times before – she was one of Stephen’s first guests, appearing on the ninth episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. This time, however, she startled Stephen a bit:

Given her upcoming role, however, startling might be what she’s going for. Comedian Jordan Peele blew audiences away in 2017 when he broke through the genre barrier, going from top tier sketch comic to top tier horror director in a quick instant. Lupita Nyong’o is the star of Peele’s newest horror film Us, a story that follows a family confronted by their own doppelgangers. So Nyong’o had to act opposite herself for a good chunk of the film, and play good and evil. She had to be scary – maybe that part stuck with her a bit?

Peele’s Get Out is well recognized as one of the best horror films of the decade, if not the entire western canon of horror films. So, apparently Us is him trying to turn up the heat a bit, and try to “out-horror” himself; Us is intended to be a much more intentionally scary film, and according to Nyong’o’s experiences at the screenings so far.

Horror films and fans aside, Nyong’o has been filling her own time with mindfulness. She excitedly shares about a 10 day retreat she recently went on, during which all she did was eat, sleep and meditate. No talking, no touching, no thinking – just being.

She’ll be the first to tell you how hard it was.

Be sure to catch Lupita Nyong’o in Us, as well as the upcoming future installments of the two hottest film series right now, Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
