Late Show Live: Chris Christie Reflects on Democratic Debaters

Last night The Late Show with Stephen Colbert went live for the second night in a row to cover part two of the Democratic presidential debates.

It was another night of Colbert making fun of Beto O’Rourke – and some of the other debaters as well. The big names to watch from this night’s debate are still Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg. But as far as coming out on top goes, Kamala Harris is the winner of that rumble. Biden went in as the front runner, and came out limping.

There were other must-seeable moments beyond Biden taking a licking. Sanders called Trump a “phony,” and more importantly “a pathological liar and a racist.” However you feel about Sanders generally, sometime you just have to love his chutzpah. But ultimately everything Sanders stood for was said at a much lower decibel and more eloquently by Kamala Harris, who really did rule the night. And Biden really did eat it. Though still not as badly as Beto O’Rourke, who was yet again the punchline despite not debating last night.

Colbert doesn’t pull too many punch on The Late Show and roasts politicians regardless of party lines. But he’s also a liberal very much in favour of the Democratic party. And he’s friend to Joe Biden – and let him have it good. He seemed sincerely impressed by Kamala Harris during last night’s debate – and had few jokes about her. The political optimist side of Colbert poked through – he just might be all-in for Harris this moment on.

After the debate rundown, in a truly bizarre move, Stephen had Montana Governor Steve Bullock on the show to play 10 different versions of himself in a single debate. It’s one of the strangest setups to a sketch done on The Late Show yet, and a glimmer into Stephen’s often-contained eccentric comedy style.

Colbert’s guest on the live episode of The Late Show was frenemy Chris Christie, former Governor of New Jersey.

There’s a lot about Chris Christie that is fundamentally terrible. But he is a veteran politician who seems to know how to analyse this stuff, so Stephen had him on to provide the political right side’s take.

Who’s to say what angle Christie is really playing at, but he seems to think that at this moment, it’s between Kamala Harris and Joe Biden for the front runner of the past week’s debates. And when it comes to taking on President Donald Trump, Christie puts the same two forward as the ones strong enough to have a chance.

It’s been a heck of a week for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. That’s all for live episodes, for now. There are more debates in the upcoming months. Whether or not those go live, there will be just as much commentary to continue to help Beto O’Rourke look foolish.
