Elisabeth Moss stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to show off her incredible acting trick!

Elisabeth Moss, currently star of television series The Handmaid’s Tale and formerly of Mad Men, visited Stephen on The Late Show this week. The two talked plenty about her hit series, the aforementioned Handmaid’s Tale. The series, about a dystopian reality in which women are oppressed into servitude, has become a sort of symbol  of feminism and resistance – especially the now-iconic red robes the women in the show are forced to wear.

The Handmaid’s Tale aired mid 2016, which was before Donald Trump became President. So at the time, everyone was like “yeah, this is one of those alternate reality shows that has no basis in real life”. Then Donald Trump became President, and when he started doing awful stuff to human rights, suddenly it didn’t seem so far fetched. The show’s imagery was quickly co-opted by women’s resistance movements, to protest the patriarchy, and topple Trump’s terrible tirade against human rights.

But after commiserating about how terribly politics is going, everyone deserves a good cry. Just to let it all out. Something about catharsis, right? Well, if you did your research (which now you don’t have to, because some creepy weirdo at Vulture did it already), you’d know that Elisabeth Moss is a champion crier. On screen. Who knows what it takes to make her cry when the cameras aren’t on.

But that’s not important, and frankly, none of your business.

Always up for a good challenge, Stephen accepts when Moss insists that they have a “cry-off” – something she seemingly just made up on the spot, but hey, if it works, go with it.

Before going with it, though, it’s worth noting that Stephen’s not a good actor. Well, he’s a good comedic actor, but when it comes to drama, he just doesn’t have the range. So crying on command probably isn’t in his skill set. But making crying on command look funny? Yeah, he’s got that covered.

It’s hard to see, but by the way they were both wiping their eyes, it seems like it was a tie. The first official Late Show cry-off ends with a boring old cry. Oh well. Hopefully Stephen’s next guest will make him cry, or vice versa. Just to spice things up.
