Avengers: Infinity War and Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch joined Stephen Colbert on his tartan picnic blanket for another session of Big Questions with Even Bigger Stars, on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

If you’re unfamiliar with Big Questions with Even Bigger Stars, it’s a segment on The Late Show wherein Stephen lays down in a “field” (see: soundstage) with his guests, and they gaze at the night sky while musing over the  humanity’s impossible to answer questions.

Also, it’s a great opportunity to make jokes.

If you’re unfamiliar with Benedict Cumberbatch… where have you been? He’s only Sherlock Holmes in the BBC’s Sherlock- the best portrayal of the character out there. He’s also been Jullian Assange in The Fifth Estate, Smaug in The Hobbit, Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness, Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, Doctor Strange in Doctor Strange, Doctor Strange in Thor: Ragnarok, Doctor Strange in Avengers: Infinity War… and those are just his appearances as Doctor Strange so far. Cumberbatch is also set to play the voice of the Grinch in 2018’s upcoming animated feature The Grinch. So, he’s in some pretty good stuff.

And, even if you don’t know him from his acting work, you should know that Benedict Cumberbatch has been bestowed the honour of the Commander of the British Empire. That’s just something that everyone should know as common knowledge… right? Either way, it’s a pretty high honour for a Brit, and Cumberbatch received it from the Queen in 2015 for his contribution to performing arts, as well as his charity work.

Unfortunately, it didn’t come with an invitation to the Royal Wedding.

Still, Cumberbatch is probably most recognizable as the Marvel character Doctor Stephen Strange, now that Avengers: Infinity War is already one of the biggest, highest grossing movies ever made. Sure, it’s got a massive cast, but you can’t forget good old Stephen Strange – he plays an integral part in the film that will likely come into fruition (see: super satisfying payoff) in next years Avengers film.

But, what’s better than an Infinity War against Thanos? An Infinity Thumb War against Stephen Colbert! Cumberbatch throws down the thumb war gauntlet for Stephen to pick up, and that he does! The two face off in a quick battle of thumbs, the rules set by legions of thumb warriors before them: the first to pin his opponent’s thumb shall be deemed the victor. Who will come out ahead? The tale is too epic of a battle to simply regale the events, you simply must view it for yourself.

Yeah okay Stephen Colbert won the thumb war. It’s his show, Benedict Cumberbatch was probably just being polite. The English, right?
