Late Show: Alexandia Ocasio-Cortez Sounds Off on Democratic Debate
Live, from New York, it’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert!
It’s Democratic Debate week in the USA, with night one of two nights already said and done – and Stephen Colbert was there to provide live post coverage. Wednesday’s debaters were Elizabeth Warren, Beto O’Rourke, Bill Deblasio, Julián Castro and Cory Booker, among a list of other debaters that would turn this short summary into a novella. There were clear winners and losers to the night, several of each and including the debate itself, but face it: nobody lost as hard as Beto O’Rourke.
Pundits are calling it already: it was a terrible night for former golden boy Beto O’Rourke. It got so bad for him that Cory Booker couldn’t help but throw shade during the debate. Like, you know it’s bad when Stephen makes fun of one candidate significantly more than the others. You know it’s really bad when Stephen stops making fun of Donald Trump to make fun of a specific candidate again.
Stephen could have stood there punching and jabbing at Beto O’Rourke all night. O’Rourke definitely gave him enough material. But it was a live show – no room for improvising this evening, Stephen.
Colbert welcomed a guest to help him take down the Democrat debaters. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined him to give her own post-debate analysis. Since, you know, she’s among the most publicly beloved Democrats out there these days. And she knows most of the debaters personally (Tim Ryan who?).
So Ocasio-Cortez’s specific insight was welcomed by Stephen – once the audience stopped chanting her initials (she seriously is loved by an adoring public). She digs in with her quick rundown, and mentions who she gives her thumbs up to.
The next debate, occurring tonight Thursday June 27 (after which there will be another live episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Global at 11.35 et/pt), hosts a bunch of big names: Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand and Pete Buttigieg. But one of those names is bigger than the rest, because this particular guy was Vice President for eight years.
A lot of commentators are saying that Biden is the safe choice for a victory of Donald Trump. While he’s had missteps, many of which have been brought to attention recently, Biden would probably be a great choice to tackle Trump. But Ocasio-Cortez thinks America can do better than Biden.
Whatever happens at tonight’s debate, you know Stephen will be there right after, firing off zingers toward the winners and losers of that debate. So don’t miss The Late Show LIVE tonight on Global, at 11.35 et/pt.
