Last night on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, star of hit new series 9-1-1 and Black Panther‘s Queen Ramonda, Angela Bassett talked about her experience with the “real” Wakanda, and what it took for her to get into acting.

Angela Bassett is the star of 9-1-1 and countless many, many other projects such as American Horror Story, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, ER, and of course the hit new record breaking Marvel film Black Panther. She’s been working professionally as an actor for over thirty years, and has even been acting since she was 13! She describes what it’s like to live the acting life, how she came to the decision to do it professionally, and how her family reacted:

9-1-1 is a series new this year about Athena Grant (Bassett), an LAPD sergeant as she responds to emergency situations – hence the title of the show. Bassett is supported by Connie Britton, who plays Abbey Clark, the emergency dispatcher, and Peter Krause as the Los Angeles fire captain. It’s already a hit, and pretty intense: in the eight episodes so far, a lot of crazy stuff has happened – just listen to Stephen Colbert rap off all the horrors Athena Grant has already encountered:

You can watch 9-1-1 and Angela Bassett Wednesday at 9.00 et/pt on Global, and catch up on the latest episodes here on GlobalTV.com!

Angela Bassett is also a big part of the aforementioned Black Panther film – one of the biggest films ever, and it’s only been out, what, four weeks? Not even that. Wakanda has taken everyone by storm and Bassett has some secrets to share about the mysterious African nation:

Sounds like being an actor is tough work. But, to be a part of such a cultural moment that Black Panther has become has got to be worth it dozens of times over – scores, even!

And the 9-1-1 star agrees. It’s still early in 2018, but there probably won’t be another movie this year – maybe this decade or even the next – that will hold as much cultural significance and impact that Black Panther has made in its four short weeks at the box office. Bassett is overjoyed to have been a part of the film, due to its cultural impact and the wonderful time she had filming it.
