Stephen Colbert’s old buddy Jon Stewart came crawling out from under The Late Show desk yet again,  to use The Late Show with Stephen Colbert as his platform to address President Donald Trump directly – and boy, was he sore. Plus, Stephen welcomes Michael Moore!

Late night shows have been in the hot seat this week since President Donald Trump made them his target while speaking at a rally on Monday. He called Stephen Colbert a lowlife. He called Jimmy Fallon a lost soul. To Trump, Jimmy Kimmel is terrible.

For the first time ever, The Late Show and The Tonight Show – mortal enemies from the late night wars of the 1990s – aired the exact same cold open, at the exact same time. Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon, with Conan O’Brien, throwing ratings aside and teaming up to throw Trump’s words back in his face.

So where does Jon Stewart fit into this? He’s at least mostly responsible for the structure of the desk segments commonly seen on The Late Show and Late Night. An attack on any of these hosts is an attack on him – but Stewart’s focus was more on America, and Trump’s attacks on the American public.

Jon Stewart is greatly responsible for where Stephen is today. It’s only payback for Stephen to let him have the desk every once in a while (if Viacom will allow it, though they probably don’t own their friendship).

So in classic Stewart Daily Show fashion, Jon Stewart delivered a funny but sincere speech to President Donald Trump – a plea to just… stop. Be a person. Will it work? No. But, with Colbert and the Jimmies being a target this week, this was more of a sign of solidarity for them, and for their fans.

Even after Jon Stewart’s segment, this episode of The Late Show kept political. Documentarian Michael Moore, known for Roger & Me, Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11, came on fired up and at the end of his rope, much like Jon Stewart.

His new documentary, Fahrenheit 11/9 (could he have picked a more confusing title?) is due out in September, and will look at the lead up and fall out of the election of November 9, 2016. While there is only so much a documentary can do, Moore thinks that the American people can do so much more. They just need to get up and do it.
