The revered king of stand-up comedy of the 1980s and 1990s, Jerry Seinfeld himself – an icon of New York, the champion of the last truly great sitcom of old – sits down with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to talk about exactly what you’d think he’d talk about: nothing.

There are few celebrities that Colbert will dedicate an entire episode to and not have any other guests. For sure Jerry Seinfeld deserves that honour – when he’s in town, you clear your schedule. But apparently the honour is all Jerry’s, because what do you know, he’s a fan of The Late Show!

For the most part, Jerry and Stephen got on like old friends. They talked about comedy, they laughed… except when Bill Cosby was brought up. A hero to the both of them as they were growing up, Cosby’s material is now tainted by the revelations of his many assaults for Colbert – a sentiment Seinfeld didn’t share, and was in fact taken aback by.

The discussion got intense. Not heated – but both realized it was an important discussion for the both of them to have on a comedy show. And despite what he said early, Jerry later back tracks himself, bringing it up again to agree – he can’t separate Cosby and his material, either.

What a pleasant interaction this turned out to be – Jerry could have turned this interview sour, but came out of it an improved and more compassionate man. Surely, this is among the great interviews of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, if not all of late night.
