Star of the hit drama Instinct Alan Cumming can’t shed his Broadway roots on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert as he breaks into song during his interview.

One of Stephen’s favourite things to do when his CBS colleagues show up is do a musical version of their show – Christopher Jackson sang a song from the hypothetical Bull musical, and Christine Baranski did a little ditty for The Good Fight. So in traditional fashion (and because Stephen never passes up an opportunity to sing on The Late Show), Colbert and Alan Cumming sang a song for Cumming’s new series Instinct.

Instinct is about Dr. Dylan Reinhart (Cumming), former CIA and current author, assisting NYC detective Elizabeth Needham (Bojana Novakovic) when she starts working a case and realizes the murderer is copying from one of Reinhart’s books. It’s a high-energy, fun police procedural that has already broken the mold – Cumming’s character is openly gay, a first for a drama on network television.

Cumming and Dr. Dylan Reinhart share a lot of traits – they’re both cool, clever, sassy and charismatic, to name a few similarities. But there are a few significant differences. First, Reinhart is American – Cumming is Scottish, And second, Reinhart is an expert motorcycle rider. Cumming… not so much. So while his co-star Bojana Novakovic can ride through her scenes with ease, Cumming needs a stand-in – and when that stand-in is done, Cumming has to race to make the transition seamless.

Movie magic! Or maybe Alan Cumming really can teleport – didn’t you see X2?

Instinct isn’t the only new venture for Cumming this year – there’s also Club Cumming. That’s right, in New York’s East Village, Alan Cumming opened a cabaret-style club, and named it after himself (well, technically he named it after a bar he had in a dressing room once, but that was named after him) – and only after himself, because they may have otherwise had to have bleeped it on CBS. Speaking of bleeping, lots of cool stuff goes on at Club Cumming – including some stuff that simply is too offensive to broadcast on national television.

What was that a painting of? Who knows, but apparently something too scandalous for television (but not really – if you care to look it up, the image is not at all inappropriate).
