A New Tradition

Dave Chapelle is hosting the first 2020 post-election episode of SNL. This is looking to become a new tradition, because Dave Chapelle hosted the post-election episode of SNL in 2016 as well. While that episode was very doom-and-gloom following the unexpected victory from Donald Trump, the tone for this weekend is yet to be determined. As of publishing this article, the winner of America’s 2020 Presidential election hasn’t been decided yet. And it’s tight. Hopefully, by Saturday, there will be a winner. Either way, the crew will have a lot of scrambling to do to keep the episode relevant.

Chappelle’s appearance on SNL in 2016 was incredibly well timed. He was in the midst of his unofficial “comeback tour”, having made very few media appearances in the preceding 10 years. So when he showed up to deliver the first monologue as America faced the then-unknown variable that would be the Trump Presidency, he did so with the perfect mix of humour, grace and comradery, saying “I’m wishing Donald Trump luck, and I’m going to give him a chance, and we, the historically disenfranchised, demand that he give us one too.”

Then, in the following four years, Trump did everything possible to make Chappelle regret his sentiment.

A New Hope

Now, Chappelle hopefully has the chance to throw it back right in Donny’s face. Hopefully.

Chappelle and the SNL crew had an incredible post-election episode in 2016. He won an Emmy for it. So many sketches were so apt, and even more so in hindsight. How half of America, and many other countries, had the biggest anxiety hangovers of their lives that week. How it feels to have the rug pulled out on a global scale. And we might be facing (and, are facing) that again. So, at the risk of going back to the well, it’s import to revisit this sketch. Because it remains just too relevant.

Who Will Be The Honourary Cast Member Now?

For the past four years, Alec Baldwin has basically been an honourary cast member, in his recurring role as Donald Trump. Heck, he’s appeared on screen more than some cast members. The deck is stacked with him and Jim Carrey as Joe Biden splitting the bill. But soon one of them will have to go. The loser of the election will soon lose cultural relevancy as well – after 2016, Kate McKinnon appeared as Hillary Clinton in four sketches. Three were in the weeks after the 2016 election, and one was in last week’s episode.

With a Trump win, Carrey’s got one episode, tops, left. With a Biden win, well, since Donald Trump has already announced his temper tantrum, Alec Baldwin will probably hang around, as least until Biden’s inauguration. So, from nearly every possible angle, a Biden win really would be the best outcome for everyone!
