The Late Show with Stephen Colbert presents star of Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, Chadwick Boseman!

Boseman has been a well regarded actor for a long time. But being a silver screen superhero is a completely different level, which includes a completely different level of recognition. Boseman has rocketed to one of the most recognized film stars out there, what with both Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War dominating the 2018 box offices. That level of celebrity definitely takes getting used to.

Currently, Boseman is a star of the two biggest films of the year, Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, both of which hold numerous varying all-time records, as well. And of course, Boseman plays the same character in both films: T’Challa, king of the African nation Wakanda. It’s a Marvel world out there right now, and Boseman has a royal spot in it. But going in to Black Panther, Boseman wanted to bring some authenticity to the superhero comic book character T’Challa – just because he can’t be real doesn’t mean he can’t seem real.

And even beyond the authenticity of the characters, there’s the Wakanda Forever salute. Director Ryan Coogler wanted to ingrain some African history and culture into the salute, and they went deep into ancient history to help come up with what they got.

Speaking of, reportedly, Chadwick Boseman and the rest of the Black Panther cast get asked to do the Wakanda Forever salute a lot. So, naturally, their enthusiasm wanes over time. But he tries to keep it fresh.

Now, the only reason that Black Panther isn’t still the biggest movie there is right now is because of Avengers: Infinity War. And for Boseman, that’s alright, because he’s in that movie, too, playing the same character. It’s his third film in the franchise, the first being Captain America: Civil War, where the character was introduced.

Avengers: Infinity War has lots and lots of CGI to allow for characters to appear that would otherwise be impossible – like the Hulk. Played by Mark Ruffalo, the Hulk is a very large, green man. He does not resemble Mark Ruffalo in the slightest. Boseman explains that in order to assist the actors, when they’re interacting with the Hulk on screen, Ruffalo puts on a silly little suit that replicates the Hulk’s stature – because you don’t want to break eye contact with the Hulk. It might make him angry.

With a second Black Panther in talks and the follow-up to Avengers: Infinity War due next year, it’s likely that Boseman isn’t quite finished with T’Challa. Whatever the next steps are for the character, it’s hard not anticipate his next appearance.
