The Late Show with Stephen Colbert hosted Matt Damon last night for the first time (if you don’t count his David Letterman appearances – which we don’t). And boy, did he bring his potty-mouth.

Seriously, it doesn’t end there: Matt Damon was obsessed with working the CBS censors hard. It’s a darn good thing that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert isn’t actually live (it’s pre-taped between 3.00 and 4.00 in the afternoon, and is broadcast live on tape) because someone’s bleeping-button finger would have been sore! Even good ol’ Catholic Stephen gets in on the fun. Who can blame him, though – have you even seen Good Will Hunting? Damon and his buddy Ben Affleck have the most foul mouths of the 1990s – and that’s the South Park and Kevin Smith decade!

Speaking of Good Will Hunting, 2017 marks the 20th anniversary for the Oscar-winning film. It’s the film that launched Matt Damon’s career, and put Ben Affleck in the running for leading man gigs. Damon remembers the time fondly, though there is a lot of conflicting emotions to go on. It launched his career; it’s a multi-award winning film he should be proud of; the melancholic memories of the late Robin Williams and Elliot Smith; the taint of having been produced by Harvey Weinstein. That last one, being a big issue that is on everyone’s minds (and was a bit of the elephant in the room), was brought up without provocation. Briefly, Damon addressed it himself.

Amazing Oscar-winning films aside, there’s a funny coincidence that Damon and Stephen share regarding the much-overlooked Happy Feet 2. Damon played one side of a krill duo in the children’s animated film, paired up with Brad Pitt. This is probably the first time it has happened to either of them this century, but neither were the first choice for the role. The first choices for the film? Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart.

That’s a badge Stephen should wear with honour – few can say they beat off Matt Damon for a role.

Though it might sound more impressive if he omitted what film it was for.
