The Late Show with Stephen Colbert had a pair of great guests last night: current reigning king of nerds J.J. Abrams and soon-to-be-winner (probably) of an Oscar and already-winner of a Golden Globe Sam Rockwell!

That’s right, king of nerds, J.J. Abrams (what else would you call someone who has broken the Star Trek/Star Wars barrier?) and friend of Stephen’s made a guest appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Abrams has somewhat-recently been announced as the director for the third film in the post-original Star Wars trilogy (that would be Episode IX if you don’t feel like doing the math). And he somewhat has some news to share about his work, on the more meta level that yes, he’s working on it:

It’s Star Wars news, so it’s exciting news! Yeah, there will be more exciting news to come, but this is all we get for now, so get hyped!

Abrams went on to reminisce about his younger days – about four or five years ago when he signed on to direct The Force Awakens. It’s an intimidating thing to do, to take over one of the biggest ever movie franchises. And let’s face it: Star Wars fandom are not a forgiving bunch. Ask Jake Lloyd, Hayden Christensen, or George Lucas. So a lot was at stake for the Lost and Alias creator. Lucky for him, though, he had a confidant and drinking buddy in Stephen Colbert.

So Abrams dodged a bullet by making The Force Awakens one of the best Star Wars films to date, appeasing the fans (also appeasing Disney by making it one of the highest grossing films to date, so he’s good).

That night, Stephen also spoke to Sam Rockwell, who’s getting Oscar buzz for his role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (a role for which he already won a Golden Globe in the Best Supporting Actor category). Rockwell has been getting a lot of attention recently, what with all the award nominations (heck, he even got to host Saturday Night Live). It hasn’t gone to his head though – rather, his feet.

One thing to take away from Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is its iconic billboards three. In fact, the idea presented in the movie (in which a mother questions local authorities over the lack of investigation of her daughter’s murder through the use of three advertising billboards) has been co-opted by the recent strong gun control movement coming out of Florida by high school students after last week’s shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School. Sam Rockwell is honoured to have been a part of something that has inspired such an important movement, and he’s encouraging of the kids to keep up the great work.
