Simu Liu Monologues for You
Simu Liu opened the post-cold opening of the show with his monologue. As has been the style for many decades now. It was short and sweet – an introduction to himself, bigging up his latest franchise, and wiping it in the faces of all those who got in his way before now. The typical first-timer monologue, really.
So where is the Internet outrage for Liu’s obvious prejudices in this monologue? The shade thrown at Trevors by Liu didn’t go unmissed here. Watch you back, “Shang-Chi”.

Simu & Bowen
The competition heats up between two first-ever Asian men to do things. Bowen Yang, who is the first Asian cast member on Saturday Night Live, goes head-to-head with Marvel’s first Asian super hero Simu Liu (being sure to get another ref of his role in Shang-Chi because gotta milk the Marvel money train while it’s still on the tracks). Their friendly interaction quickly devolves into a petty rivalry as they are both announced as the first Asian to have done increasingly trivial things. But the glory gets the best of them – and one of them has an ace up his sleeve.
Meta humour has become such a thing on Saturday Night Live now, that this kind of sketch where cast members and hosts play themselves in backstage antics happens about once a week. And it’s great! From Pete Davidson’s romantic life in the tabloids, to Pete Davidson’s difficulties with mental health and addiction, to Pete Davidson’s… wait, they really focus on what Pete Davidson is going through a lot, huh?
But on a show with so many cast members that you could feasibly go weeks without seeing one or two of them, having some appear as themselves helps with that audience-performer connection. Bowen Yang has been a fan favourite since he started two years ago, and having him do his best thing back stage is pretty much all SNL fans want these days anyways.
