Late Show: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Talks Congress Over Ice Cream

Youngest woman ever to be elected to the House of Representatives Alexandia Ocasio-Cortez made her second appearance onĀ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

One of the faces of the 2018 Blue Wave this past midterm election, Alexandia Ocasio-Cortez is known for election disruption after election disruption. She first made noise earlier in 2018 when she dethroned sitting Democratic Congressman Joe Crowley in the primaries. In November, she went on to win in the general election, becoming America’s youngest woman, at age 29, elected to Congress in New York’s 14th district.

And that’s just the prologue. She’s an incredible politician already, and she’s going to make even more waves over the coming years.

But she is a rookie, and every rookie has their first day/first week nervousness and glory stories – and she tells hers over a tub of Ben and Jerry’s “Stephen Colbert’s AmeriCone Dream” ice cream.

Ocasio-Cortez assumed office January 3 – the government had been shut down for a couple weeks by the time she started in Congress, so she hasn’t gotten the full experience yet. Because the experience of a Congressperson usually isn’t trying to get the government up and running again. But she did, and spent a good portion of her time as a Congressperson playing an impromptu game of hide and seek with Mitch McConnell (eventually creating the hashtag #WheresMitch).

No one should have to spend their time trying to be around Mitch McConnell – it ought to be the contrary. What a waste of energy.

Ocasio-Cortez made headlines again recently, when she was given the charge to make the elder Democratic Congresspeople 2019-compatible: she crash-coursed Pelosi and her gang on how to use social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram. Because let’s face it – most baby boomer politicians can’t quite grab the nuance of what a meme is, or how to employ the brevity that a younger generation favours.

As previously mentioned, Ocasio-Cortez is a wave maker. She’s stirred the pot just getting into Congress, and her policies aren’t only left enough to cause a myocardial infarction in her Republican counterparts, but also progressive enough to make some of her Democratic party members flush. She’s got her sights on the tax issue, and won’t stop until the obscenely wealthy are forced to spread their fortune around a bit more, and give back to the country that enabled their wealth to begin with.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may be young and green, but she’s persistent, strong and people driven. She’s the kind of leader that not just America, but humanity needs always.
