Survivor: Ghost Island Scoop – Week 5 Recap: Winners, Losers, Top Moments
Survivor Recap & Highlights: Episode 5 - Winners, Losers, Top Moments | Season 36: Ghost Island - Global TV

John Powell – GobalTV.com

As Michael Yerger so succinctly put it, Survivor: Ghost Island is about reversing curses not creating new ones. Too bad the Survivor gods aren’t smiling down kindly on the Malolo Tribe.

Having its members swapped for a third time had no effect at all on the blighted tribe. There have been six dates with Jeff Probst at Tribal Council this season and Malolo has attended five of them. At present, they have lost three Immunity Challenges in a row.

CATCH UP NOW: Survivor: Ghost Island – Season 36, Episode 5: “Fate Is The Homie”

Next episode, it appears as if the players torch everything in sight hoping to appease the Survivor gods and end the Malolo curse. You never know. It just might work.

The third switch resulted in not two but three new tribes being created this time around, each with three original Naviti and two original Malolo.

The new Malolo Tribe is: James Lim, Desiree Afuye, Kellyn Bechtold, Angela Perkins and Michael.

The new Naviti Tribe is: Domenick Abbate, Donathan Hurley, Bradley Kleihege, Chelsea Townsend and Libby Vincek.

The new Yanuya Tribe is: Jenna Bowman, Wendell Holland, Laurel Johnson, Chris Noble and Sebastian Noel.

The numbers game would seem to be in the original Naviti’s favour. If those allegiances remain strong, remain unbreakable, they could have an easy and predictable time when the merger finally rolls around.

Week 5: Game Fail – James Lim

James was an interesting Survivor player and personality. He wasn’t leading the charge. He wasn’t letting others play his game for him. He was a central part of the Malolo wheels turning. He was dependable. He was loyal. He just wasn’t flashy and not everyone on Survivor has to be.

Strategic Gameplay

James had a knack for dissecting situations. What would one expect from a business analyst? He saw through Dom’s phoney idol and pushed hard for Morgan Ricke to go, which she did. Although he wasn’t the principle strategist, he was a thinking man’s Survivor player.

Rating: 3.5 / 5

Social Gameplay

This wasn’t James’ Survivor forte. He did mine relationships as best that he could but even people on his own tribe agreed they had no emotional connection to him in any way.

Rating: 2 / 5

Entertainment Value

Not being a bombastic Survivor player is not a terrible thing. Unfortunately because of the medium and the nature of the series, it is those characters who are remembered whether they were heroes or villains. James never stood out even though he was a dependable player.

Rating: 2 / 5

Final Castaway Rating: 7.5 / 15

Week 5: Powell’s Picks

Who played it cool and who proved themselves to be a fool? Every week John Powell makes his picks for the worst and best players of the week.

Bronze Amateur: Libby Vincek

Word has already spread about her not being trustworthy.

Silver Amateur: Chris Noble

His ego is getting the better of him and damaging his Survivor game.

Gold Amateur: James Lim

He didn’t play a terrible game; he just didn’t make connections when he needed to.

Bronze MVP: The Blindfold Challenge

Blindfolding the Survivors, letting them by stumble around, never gets old.

Silver MVP: Desiree Afuye

She lost the challenge yet survived the vote. She could very well be that player who before you know it; they are in the final four.

Gold MVP: Wendell Holland

Such a strong episode. He strengthened his social bonds with Sebastian, which could prove to be very important after the merger and really came to the forefront in the challenge.
