Game Fail: Why Vytas Baskauskas Lost Survivor
John Powell – GlobalTV.com
For good or for bad, it is clear the hallmark of this season of Survivor: Second Chances will be reputations. Unlike a typical season, all of the returning players know each other exceptionally well. They know their weaknesses. They know their strengths. They know how they all played before.
The key for many of the former players who have dubious reputations is if they are able to transcend the perceptions and evolve as people and as players. It seems those who don’t are doomed to have their torch snuffed once again.
Yoga instructor and math professor, Vytas Baskauskas simply didn’t do his homework. Diving back into the game with the same approach and mentality he employed last time around was a fatal mistake. His fellow castaways saw through his manipulations and it made him a target over the equally irritating Abi-Maria.
You gotta have messed up really, really badly to be voted out over Abi-Maria.
Not much of change from Blood versus Water. Using his charm and charisma he freely admitted it was his goal to woo the women into thinking again he was a sensitive and honest guy.
What Vytas should have realized is the women had seen it all before and were not going to be duped again which is why every female tribemate, except for Kelly Wiglesworth, voted to give Vytas the boot.
Rating: 1 / 5
Playing up his sensitive, emotional side with the women and totally ignoring the Ta Keo men for the most part was a terrible social strategy.
While Joe was embraced for his yoga classes at Bayon, Vytas was pretty much mocked by everyone except Kelly who shared the same interest. Pushing himself onto other people and being too egotistical right out of the gate shortened Vytas’ stay.
Rating: 1 / 5
While it was curious last time to see Vytas at work, his manipulations and interactions came off as very forced and very false this time around. Without the sibling rivalry to play off of, Vytas was portrayed as a huckster rather than a sincere personality.
His return will be remembered for his failed stretching session right before the challenge and his colourful boxer shorts and nothing more.
Rating: 2 / 5
Final Castaway Rating: 4 / 15
Powell’s Picks: Episode 1
Who played it cool and who proved themselves to be a fool? Every week John Powell makes his picks for the worst and best players of the week.
Bronze Amateur: Stephen Fishbach
Ironically, Stephen is in exactly the same position at Bayon as he was during the start of Tocantis. As the odd man out, the nerdy guy, he has to find a support system of some kind. Right now, he is twisting in the wind and that is not a good way to start Survivor. His game is far from over but he is not in a solid position at present.
Silver Amateur: Abi-Maria Gomes
Just like Vytas, Abi-Maria has not learned from her past mistakes. Kicking up a fuss about a missing piece of jewelry and accusing Peih-Gee of stealing it did not go over well with the rest of the tribe as we saw by the many votes against her at Tribal Council. Will she be able to bounce back? Only time will tell.
Gold Amateur: Vytas Baskauskas
Played the same game and got nailed for it. Instead of putting his personality out there so aggressively, he should have lounged in the background and let Abi-Maria be the sole target.
Bronze MVP: Joe Anglim
Reeling in both the men and the women on his side, Joe is once again playing a strong game. He is a challenge threat, solid socially and a key camp contributor. So far, so good.
Silver MVP: Jeff Varner
The mind games have begun. Playing up his doddering persona while working people behind the scenes, Jeff has everyone fooled. They are not seeing him as the real threat he is and can be. It will be curious to see whether the façade crumbles or grows stronger.
Gold MVP: Kelley Wentworth and the premiere twists
Kelly has come to play. Pulling such a bold move by snatching the Hidden Immunity in front of everyone shows she is willing to take risks in the game. She also voted out Vytas, which could put her in the dominant alliance at Ta Keo.
Forcing Ta Keo to go to Tribal Council immediately after the challenge and adding that devious twist to the Hidden Immunity Idol may not be all that fair but were brilliant twists to start the season.
