Survivor Episode 5 Recap - Winners, Losers, Top Moments | Season 34: Game Changers

John Powell – GlobalTV.com

You can never be comfortable in the game of Survivor. Once you are, that is when things tend to flip and usually not in your favour or direction.

The Mana, Nuku and Tavua Tribes have been sailing along quire smoothly, plotting their course  the last few episodes so it was time to once again shake things up a bit.

The castaways have been thrown for another loop as the tribes have been switched up once again and just like last time around some have emerged in a far better position and others are now fighting for their lives in the game.

The new tribes are…

Mana Tribe: Troyzan Robertson, Michaela Bradshaw, Sierra Thomas, Hali Ford, Aubry Bracco, Cirie Fields and Brad Culpepper.

Nuku Tribe: Sandra Diaz-Twine, Sarah Lacina, Jeff Varner, Andrea Boehlke, Tai Trang, Zeke Smith and Ozzy Lusth.

Of note to viewers, Sandra and Jeff are at the bottom of the Nuku Tribe.

What about Debbie Wanner you say? We haven’t forgotten about her. Debbie didn’t draw a buff and therefore was sent to…Exile Island, sorta. In a surprise to us and her, Exile Island wasn’t an island but a yacht filled with goodies and former Survivor: Caramoan winner and now consultant to the castaways, John Cochran.

Game Fail: Sandra Diaz-Twine

We have just witnessed Survivor history. After winning both the Pearl Islands and Heroes vs. Villains seasons, Sandra Diaz-Twine finally had her torch snuffed at Tribal Council.

Who woulda thunk it?

The most transparent threat in Survivor history, Sandra was permitted to stay in the game, play and scheme as only she can for 16 days.

Sandra, a person who has not only won twice but every fan and every player knows her ability to manipulate and control others increases the longer she stays in the game.

What were these people thinking?

The new Nuku Tribe finally got a clue and fed Sandra to the sharks…and not a moment too soon.

Strategic Gameplay

Hand her the crown, she is the queen. Sandra could have chosen to stay in the background and fly under the radar as much as a former winner like her can. That would have been the easy way out. Sandra took the hard way, sticking her neck out constantly, making her target even bigger and bigger.

Tony tried to campaign against her. She helped grease the wheels for his exit. She survived one of the most chaotic Tribal Councils ever seen on Survivor and Malcolm did not.

By eating all the sugar and also rallying the troops, Sandra fueled the fire between J.T. and Michaela, which went a long way in convincing J.T. not to bring his hidden immunity idol to Tribal Council.

Sandra was a power player from the moment she stepped onto the island.

Social Gameplay

sandra4

There is no way you can persuade so many people to follow you if you don’t have charisma and great social skills. Despite being one of the most feared and dastardly players ever, Sandra still managed to gather troops around her. That was impressive to say the least.

Rating: 4/ 5

Entertainment Value

Sandra was a power player from the moment she stepped on the beach. She was in our faces each and every week and was the centre of much of the excitement this season. You can love her, you can hate her but you will never forget Sandra Diaz-Twine.

Final Castaway Rating: 14 / 15

Who played it cool and who proved themselves to be a fool? Every week John Powell makes his picks for the worst and best players of the week.

debbie_mvp

Bronze Amateur: Debbie Wanner

Why in the world didn’t she put her ego in check and listen to what John Cochran had to say? Cochran is right. She is far too confident.

jeff_mvp

Silver Amateur: Jeff Varner

He was fooled by the others and is still the odd person out in his tribe.

tai_mvp

Gold Amateur: Tai Trang

He not only gave away who his alliance was voting for but his actions at Tribal Council proved he cannot and never will be trusted.

Bronze MVP: The Nuku Tribe

For finally seeing the light and the error of their ways and getting rid of one of the biggest threats ever in Survivor.

tai_mvp

Silver MVP: Tai Trang

As always, Tai’s gameplay is a mixed bag. This week he did find two hidden immunity idols and succeeded in causing chaos at Tribal Council.

sandra_mvp

Gold MVP: Sandra Diaz-Twine

All hail the queen; she fought until the very end and never played it safe.
