Supergirl is Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Kal-El, AKA Clark Kent, AKA Superman. You might have heard of him – he’s that other guy in a cape? So from Kara’s family connections alone, we have a pretty good idea of what she’s capable of, and the fact that she’s destined to save the world from some pretty nasty folks.
With Supergirl coming to Global on October 26, we thought we’d give you a handy guide to the baddies that will be featured throughout the series, plus, the guest appearances to keep an eye out for in this first season of Supergirl!
Maxwell Lord is a very powerful businessman in the DC universe. However, his loyalties remain somewhat…in question. He was a financial backer for the Justice League, but he’s also been involved with some more nefarious groups. He’s also gifted with telekinetic abilities – but you didn’t hear that from us. Maxwell Lord will be played by Peter Facinelli (Nurse Jackie, The Twilight Saga).
Hellgrammite AKA Roderick Rose is an entomologist who subjected himself to a mutagenic process to become half insect, half man. His schemes mostly involve turning humans into subservient bugs to rule the world. He’s known to be an adversary of Superman mostly, but has also had bouts with other heroes in the DC universe. Justice Leak (The Great Debaters) is playing Hellgrammite in Supergirl.
Reactron is a human nuclear reactor. He has harnessed atomic energy through a suit that can be used to fire concussive blasts. In the comics, his mutant powers are triggered during a Vietnam War battle. He also possesses a heart made of gold kryptonite, which incapacitates Kryptonians in a matter of seconds. This is going to be a bit of a challenge for Kara Zor-El! Reactron will be played by Chris Browning (The 100).
In the comics, Livewire AKA Leslie Willis is a villain from Metropolis. She’s a confident, abrasive, and funny shock-jock (get it?) who works for CatCo Media, the conglomerate owned by Cat Grant. When an accident gives her dangerous powers, Supergirl must stop her. Livewire is played by True Blood alumna, Brit Morgan.
In the comics, evil scientist T.O. Morrow created an android in his own image to use against the Justice League. The Red Tornado possesses super strength and can hack into any computer in the world. This is a big deal as this is also the first time the Red Tornado will be portrayed on screen. He’ll be played by Iddo Goldberg (Salem).
An escapee of the Phantom Zone (…more on that later!), Vartox is a former prisoner who’s come to Earth to wreak havoc with his weapon of choice: a giant, alien-looking axe. Kara and Vartox go head-to head in the premiere episode, after he discovers another super-being on Earth. Vartox is played by Owain Yeoman.
Non, who is a crony of General Zod from Superman II, is rumored to appear later in the season. Like Zod, Non is a Kryptonian, who has similar powers to Kara and Kal-El. Non’s casting has been kept top secret, but we’ll spill all the details once they’re available!
…Oh, and one villain-related detail you’re going to want to know:
The Phantom Zone
You might be asking yourself, where are all these supervillains coming from? The answer is the Phantom Zone. The Phantom Zone is an anomaly in space where time doesn’t move. It’s also home to Krypton’s prison. When Kara first left Krypton for Earth, her ship left just after her Kal-El’s did, but the resulting explosion of Krypton pushed her ship into the Phantom Zone, preventing her from aging. The circumstances of how she was able to leave The Phantom Zone are unclear at the moment, but whatever got her to Earth also brought the big baddies following close behind!
Bonus guest stars and special appearances!
The New Adventures of Lois and Clark’s Superman, Dean Cain makes a guest appearance as the adoptive father of Kara Zor-El. Joining him, as her adoptive mother, is the original Supergirl from 1984 – Helen Slater
And of course, what would a Superseries be without the Lanes? Step Up’s Jenna Dewan-Tatum appears as Lucy Lane, Lois’ younger sister, and X-Men First Class’ Glenn Morshower plays their father, Sam Lane.
