Stephen Colbert will be going live on air next Tuesday for President Trump’s State of the Union coverage on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Remember last January, when everyone was having a jolly time laughing at Trump’s State of the Union address because what was on everyone’s mind was “at least things can’t get worse than this!”.
Ha, ha, ha.
Has the last year in the Trump administration been “unprecedented,” or is it – now that we’re entering the third year (gulp) of Trump’s presidency – is it all just par for the course? Is nothing surprising anymore, because you expect to not expect what’s coming next?
Last year’s State of the Union was exactly as you’d expect a Trump SotU to go – it had more middle aged white guys standing and clapping than a “Margaritaville” encore at a Jimmy Buffett concert. And it was all Trump’s usual talking points – wall, FBI, MAGA, America First, Nationalism etc etc.
So last year Stephen had a lot to work with.
This year will probably be a lot of the same, with BRAND NEW EXCITING EXTRAS! Like wall 2019 edition, and child hostages in cages at the border where the ransom payment is money to build the wall, and FBI witch hunt 2019 edition. You get the point.
But the real question when it comes to this year’s SotU address is will it even happen? There are reports that Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House, won’t let Trump come and address Congress unless he stops this government shutdown nonsense. He can continue the government shutdown, or he can address Congress, but he can’t do both – because the State of the Union is by the invitation of the Union; Congress. He’s their guest, and this year, he might not be. Pelosi offered the alternative of Trump sending his speech in writing for the Union to read – but what are the chances of Trump doing that? For him it’s not about addressing Congress, it’s about being on TV. It’s not about the words, it’s about the public appearance.
The Late Show will go live regardless. Stephen’s guests include Senator Kamala Harris, Bradley Whitford and Gary Clark Jr., as well at former New Jersey Governor and guy who either really hates or really loves bridges Chris Christie will be on to talk about his time in the Trump circle, and his new book on the same topic, Let Me Finish. When it comes to fans of Chris Christie, there aren’t many, and Stephen Colbert is definitely not one of them. So this interview will be interesting – Colbert has had his fair share of fools on the show before – Ted Cruz, Anthony Scaramucci, even Donald Trump – but he’s always a professional when it comes to the interview. Christie is a boob of a different sort, so it will be interesting to see how that one goes down.
At least he won’t play silly dance games with him to make him more relatable and appear as less of an incompetent monster, unlike Jimmy Fallon.
State of the Union or no State of the Union, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert live State of the Union coverage is going to be a great episode regardless, and one to not miss.
