Small businesses are the backbone of many communities. With a hometown feel, small businesses support communities and create vibrant landscape with local treasures. A small business owner doesn’t just have customers; they establish long-lasting friendships. In this series, our host HGTV Canada Contractor Sebastian Clovis will meet four of these owners, that remind us what these businesses mean to the people they serve and why shopping small is so very important. Portland Market understands the important relationship between nature and community. This nature-led plant shop is dedicated to community and helping people cultivate a love for nature through plants. Owner, Irene Hickman, makes sure Sebastian’s hands get dirty! We stir it up with Calay Hall, owner of Krave Coffee, who not only is a small business owner herself, but also supports other small businesses in turn; all while providing ethically sourced/specialty coffee. Things get “creative”, as she puts Sebastian to work behind the counter. From latte art to freshly baked naan bread, Sebastian heads into Cumin Kitchen with owner Krishna Gaudel and learns why this authentic Indian restaurant is a staple within the community. We jump into the water with Oceah Oceah. Paddleboarding along the Humber River with co-owner Jenifer Rudski, Sebastian learns the history of this traditional Indigenous waterway and attempts to maintain his composure when challenged to a headstand while boarding. Small businesses are the beating heart of this country and this series introduces us to the people that power it.
