Can you smell what The Rock is hosting?

Well, it’s been a heck of a season! The 42nd season of Saturday Night Live has been an emotional one, what with all that nonsense stemming from the American presidential election, and then from the American president himself, Donald Trump.

Saturday Night Live had to do something special to cold-open this finale. And they did: Alec Baldwin sat alone at a piano, in costume as Donald Trump. He sang and pretended to play Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” mirroring an episode earlier in the season (the first one after the election) where Kate McKinnon sat at the very same piano, singing the very same song, in costume as a very different presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton. Baldwin was eventually joined by members of the SNL cast, in costume as various people in Trump’s family and inner circle. Scarlett Johansson made a cameo as Ivanka Trump, as well.

But on to the host of the show, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the most electrifying man to host SNL and newest member of the Five-Timers club (and the third member to be inducted this season). The Rock, in his monologue, (jokingly) announced his intentions to run for president of the United States of America, with Tom Hanks as his running mate (much to Alec Baldwin’s chagrin).

It was the best season finale any fan could ask for. They balanced the political stuff with the goofy stuff, with that understated cold open, The Rock’s monologue and a slew of wonderfully hilarious sketches. Weekend Update was particularly on-the-nose, and was the perfect vessel to send off long-time cast member Bobby Moynihan by bringing back his Drunk Uncle character, tying together the political and the silly.

It’s been the best season in years. Who knows what next season holds, because honestly, who knows who will be president by then. But one thing’s for sure – it’s a renaissance for SNL, and it would be a shame to miss out on even a second of it.
