Last night on SNL: Matthew McConaughey and Star Wars auditions you’ll be glad didn’t pan out

This weekend’s Saturday Night Live impressed yet again, with guest host Matthew McConaughey and musical performances from Adele.

The opening McConalogue (that’s a Matthew McConaughey monologue) was all McConaughey: the story of his first acting gig, in Dazed and Confused, and the origin of his breakout catchphrase “Alright, alright, alright.”

McConaughey was the best host of the season so far, carrying some of the weaker sketches with his surprising and welcome funnyman chops. For the really good sketches, though, McConaughey set a bar that guests over the season will hopefully overcome with flying leaps.

In addition to all the McConerrific sketches, SNL treated us once again with their rarest of recurring sketches, the Star Wars screen tests.

In addition to some amazing celebrity impersonations, including Cecily Strong’s scarily accurate Sofía Vergara, Bobby Moynihan’s meek but demanding George Lucas and Jay Pharoah’s crossed-eyed Shaq, Star Wars: The Force Awakens cast members Daisy Ridley and John Boyega participate as themselves. Also joining in on the fun are guest appearances from Emma Stone, John Hamm (going up for the role of Hamm Solo), and Michael Buble singing “Making Wookie.”

The Saturday Night Live team is proving that they’re making each week better an better, so be sure to tune in Saturday Dec 5th for host Ryan Gosling and musical guest Leon Bridges, 11.30 et/pt on Global!
