Have you noticed anything different about this season of Kevin Can Wait? Avid fans of the show certainly have, and they’ve been searching for an explanation ever since the premiere. Kevin James’s wife Donna, played by Erinn Hayes, was swiftly replaced by his former King of Queens co-star Leah Remini after her guest spot in the first season. It’s the big elephant in the (living) room that the show has yet to acknowledge – until now.
Kevin James assures fans that the switch was made to open up new possibilities for storylines. “I get that people are like ‘Whoa, why would you do this?’ But it really felt like a thing like this was needed for this show to drive forward,” James told the New York Daily News.
He also adds that his character was originally supposed to be a single father, but in the end, the producers decided to write in a wife. Leah’s character Vanessa isn’t currently married to Kevin, so the change seems to be a move in the show’s original direction.
“Now, I have to deal with my daughter in a different way, and she’s gonna go to college, or one’s getting married, or the holidays. And it deals with things in a different, weightier way,” James said.
However, Kevin’s explanation comes after opinions have already formed about how the show handled Erinn’s departure. Fans went to Twitter to talk about it, since the show didn’t.
