He's dashing,
charming and a big hit with the fans. We speak with Daniel Goddard about his
character, Cane, the weirdest job he's ever had and his love for Canada!
A lot has changed
with your character, Cane. How has the fan reaction been to your character
reuniting with Lily?
The fan reaction has actually been really good. It's one of those things
that the fans have always related to Cane and Lily because Cane and Lily at the
core of their relationship epitomize what soap operas are about. The love, the
romance, the expectation, the anticipation. I think now it's just a matter of
seeing what happens from a story perspective, as to where it goes and what
drama, trials, and tribulations will accrue either outside of the relationship
or inside.
Are you usually aware
of where your storyline is headed?
No, everything's kept a secret. They like to keep us in the
precipice of not knowing. Stuff like this I like. I like not being able to pick
where they're going with it. Sometimes you can look-in (to a storyline) and say
"well, this is what's going to happen." And I think this one will
give the viewer an interest in following the pieces as they reveal themselves.
What's the weirdest
job you've ever had?
I did door-to-door sales at one point in my life and I was
quite good at door-to-door sales. I took it on as a challenge. Some people join
the French Foreign Legion, I did door-to-door sales instead! Door-to-door sales
is a very insular experience because you're not talking to a mass audience,
you're connecting to one person. You're sitting in their house, It's much like
soap operas. You want that person watching you to feel the intimate experience
and feel the bond that you have with them.
On to your personal
life. I know you're a very proud daddy, does
your sons ever watch Y&R go "hey! What are you doing there?"
They watch every now and then, but I'm not a big fan of having them watch
me on television.
Why not?
I don't want my kids to grow up to be actors! I have no interest in that.
I'm fulfilling the stereotypical "I want my children to be doctors and
lawyers." That being said, whatever he wants to do he can do, but it's
ironically the reason why Ford has already chosen his career as a heart surgeon
-- he's six!
Where do you hope that they take Cane as
a character? Where do you want to see him?
Anywhere where he has a fully multi-dimensional character that interacts in
stories that stay true to the core of his moral compass, and also stretches his
ability to test him in situations he hasn't been in yet. I don't care what it
is! Just something that has some form of logic, some structure, something that
is realistic, and something that is analytically complex in the fact that the
outcome is not there. So, I mean that leaves him a multitude of options!
Well, we look forward
to seeing everything that happens to Cane!
It's been my pleasure. It's been a good experience, I enjoy
going to Canada, I enjoy going up there and meeting the fans. It's a good time.
