Under The Spotlight: Canada Sings

What makes you standout?

Do you have a story about overcoming adversity? Maybe, you have a background as a burlesque dancer; or once had a near death experience involving a flock of seagulls. This May, Canada Sings is back for second season, and we've gathered some little known, sometimes zany, sometimes heartwarming facts about a few of this season's contestants. With a chance to win $25,000 for their Glee club's charity of choice, it is certain that each and every Glee club will be singing and dancing their hearts out. We want to know what makes these contestants standout, because It will take tapping into that extra something to bring home a prize that could change people's lives.

We've made a list of our favorite factoids about this seasons contestants. Who do you think has the je ne sais quoi to lead their Glee club to victory?

A Few Little Known Facts About the Season 2 Canada Sings Contestants:

  • Deal With It showgirl Aline Phiasackeua teaches pole dancing and dances in burlesque shows.
  • Cindy Scott (Super Sonic) and her husband, who met in the RCAF band, have a hobby farm with 3 llamas, 2 alpacas, 30 chickens, 12 guinea hens, pigs, dogs, cats.
  • As a member of the Winnipeg metal band Killer Dwarves, Super Sonic’s Mike Hall opened for acts such as KISS and Motley Crüe.
  • As a flight attendant on Air India, GO Glee’s Anil Fernandes had a life or death experience when a plane hit 10 seagulls and almost crashed.

 

This season Laurieann Gibson joins the judging panel. As a choreographer, Gibson has worked with such renowned artists as Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and P. Diddy.” 

 

  • While running with the torch for the 2010 Winter Olympics alongside Jann Arden, Jeff Simpkins (OPP Project Glee) heard an onlooker yell, “Sing for us!” so he began to sing…before realizing the request was for Jann.
  • Kate Dawson (OSCillations) is a member of Mensa (which means she is incredibly smart)
  • Kathleen Johnson (InSPAration) lives at the YWCA Elm Centre while going to school, working part time, and being the single mother of five children, four of which have special needs ranging from Autism to severe ADHD.
  • Positively Peel’s Monique Armstrong is proud to be part of a Children’s Aid success story – her mother was raised in a Children’s Aid program.

This season's judges: Jann Arden (L), Rob Van Winkle (a.k.a. Vanilla Ice, M), and Laurieann Gibson (R)  

 

  • Michael Chambers (the Associates) was in a rap group called The Outsiders, which opened for LL Cool J and 50 Cent.
  • Heidi Breier (OSCillations) has dug for dinosaur fossils on excavations and also worked at Dinosaur National Park in Alberta.
  • Sweet Day’s Susan Wade looked to her son Sam for inspiration when joining Canada Sings -- in 2010 he cycled across Canada to raise money for prostate cancer and in 2011 he biked to Mexico for Easter Seals children’s camps.
