DAYS Tackles Gay-Centered Storyline

Sex, love and intrigue - soap operas have got it all. The never-ending drama and over-the-top passion keep viewers glued to their TV's every day. Throughout the history of soaps, the storylines and characters have evolved. As society tackles controversial issues, the soap world continues to do the same.

There's been some buzz lately about Days of our Lives exploring a possible gay storyline. Days is no stranger to controversial storylines, making it the ideal soap to tackle issues surrounding sexuality and alternative lifstyle choices. The rumours have been swirling that Days will embark on this gay-centered storyline featuring Sami Brady's  eldest son, Will Roberts. I say, it's about time! Let's face it, the current relationship Will has with Gabriela Hernandez is both platonic and boring.  If the rumours prove to be true, Days follows in the footsteps of other soaps showcasing front burner storylines of gay couples struggling to find love and acceptance in society. The storyline is a progressive and much needed next step for the soap.

Homosexuality has been a topic of conversation in soap opera society for many decades now. Gay characters continue to emerge and drive storylines throughout the soap world.  It's not surprising that Days wants to keep things fresh and moving with the times. This show has created some of the best couples throughout its 45 year run. With the passionate romances of fan-favourites, John and Marlena, Patch and Kayla and Bo and Hope; the time is now to create some new relationship magic. What better way than to venture into a successful gay storyline succeeding fellow soaps All My Children and newly deceased As the World Turns? I predict a bump in ratings if the story is handled with care and commitment.

Stories focusing on various forms of sexuality and alternative lifestyles have met its fair share of backlash over the years. Days of our Lives has never shied from tackling stories with varying levels of acceptance. It has proven unafraid of taking risk and pushing the envelope as seen with Marlena's possession years ago and the recent removal of Jennifer Horton's heart. If fans are supposed to suspend their disbelief for unbelievable circumstances, surely they can focus on some realism along the way. Same-sex relationships are a step in the right direction to accomplish this.

I can't wait to see how the writer's handle Days first gay storyline. Glad they're finally getting with the times!

What are your thoughts Days Fans? Who would you like to see "come out" as gay?
